It's usually more cost efficient to rent a log splitter for a weekend if you're not gonna use it more than 10 times a year.

We had a 3pt mounted splitter that ran off the rear hydraulics. It was a bush hog brand listed as a 20 Ton.
It went with the tractor I sold last year and I bought a like new Countyline 25 ton for $1k. It doesn’t tie the tractor up and it cycles faster than the 3pt one.

My dad used the cheapest log splitter he could find. Turned out to be a 13 yr old son swinging a 13lb maul. grin

If you run a hydraulic line and lifting cable they're even more handy when handling big rounds.

We built one years ago. I am not sure of the tons but it is a huge cylinder off of a piece of CAT equipment. That this will split anything. Knots don't slow it down. It will even split elma and other stuff that most folks wont fool with.
