This is a take off on the official bow kill thread. I'd love for anyone that kills a deer with a bow to respond to this thread. Maybe one of the mods would see fit to sticky it to the top of the page.

I've been looking at the broadhead and distance to recovery on all the bow kills. It doesn't appear that the big mechanicals are putting deer down at any shorter distance than fixed blades. It's hard to compare without writing down the info, when the posts are long with pictures added, etc....

I think it would be good info to see, for all of us. I know we all agree that shot placement is the key, but we've got a pretty large test group here and might get some beneficial info from the results of the thread.

I haven't hunted this year yet, but let's limit the info to this years deer only.

None so far this year, but I've killed several with Thunderheads and several with mar-den vortex, which is what I currently shoot. I have not noticed much difference between the 2 on distance traveled when the shot is thru heart / lungs area were its supposed to be (rarely run more than 50 yards with either head). Recovery rate has increased dramatically on gut shot deer with the vortex vs the thunderhead. 2 3/4" hole is much harder to plug up and leaves more sign on the ground to follow.

I shot a doe at about 20 yds Sat morning with 100g Muzzy 3 blade and a good heavy aluminum arrow. The deer was quartering away, but on the hill and about even with me. I hit her behind the shoulder and the Muzzy broke two ribs on entrance, then came out in front of the off shoulder. No damage to the head, and I could have just put the arrow back in the quiver and been ready to hunt again, but those broken ribs ripped up the fletching. She went down at the shot and never went a step.

My hunting partner killed a 7 point at 8 yards with a graphite arrow and an expandable broadhead; sorry, I don't know what kind it was. His deer was also quartering away, and it was about the same hit as mine but the deer was well below him. No exit, but the deer ran only about 100 yards and went down in sight. One of the blades on the broadhead broke off, and no blood trail at all. Count me unimpressed. If the deer had been close to a thicket, it would have been a tough recovery.

He put Muzzies on all his hunting arrow after that.

All the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
