So if we were to take an area and introduce a deer herd into it starting with zero and just letting it grow untouched……..you will start out in the beginning with a certain % of your adult does having twins…….Just to put an easy to work with number on it lets say that 100% of the adult does are having twins….Realistically it will be less but we’re just using easy math to make the concept easy to understand……So that means that if we have 100 adult does then we produce 200 fawns…..with 100 those being bucks
Now, as the population grows, you will eventually hit a threshold where that % will begin to decrease……This is the point where food resources start to become limited by the population growth and the health of the individual does are being impacted…..When that happens then more and more does will begin to have single fawns…….So lets say our herd has grown to 200 does now and they are all having single fawns as a result……That equals 200 fawns with 100 of those being bucks….Now we’ve got the same buck production but its taking twice the amount of does to produce it……..
So……when you ask the question of how many does do I need to shoot??.....For all of as a group, the answer should be the amount that it takes to keep the twinning rate right there at that ideal threshold where one more doe would tip the scale……If 100 does have 100% twin rate then 101 does would make it 99%......That 100 mark is where maximum buck production is occurring for us all with the fewest amount of does…….Of course its not gonna be exact but what you gotta realize here in our scenario is that 10 does will have a 100% rate too but you’re only producing 10 buck fawns……leaving 90 potential bucks on the table that the land could have produced……The further we all hold the overall population down below that threshold….. the less bucks we produce as a group…..or the more that’s left on the table……If we surveyed the landscape, I think we would find that many places are well below this twinning threshold now....If I had to choose I'd rather be slightly over than selling ourselves way short.

and how do we know how many are twinning........ IM LOST as ball in high weeds with all this deer herd stuff......... Develop a method for sampling individual doe health for different areas through maybe something like a DMAP program…….. Tie the twinning threshold to a coinciding weight threshold and use the trending average doe weight over time as the measuring stick of whether the too many threshold had been reached or not…….If weights are trending up or stable above our goal weight then you don’t have too many……If weights start trending down then maybe you've crossed that threshold and arent killing enough……..Using this information along with the game check data over time you should be able to get a general idea for how many that is for each county as a starting point to go on…....Something along these lines anyways.....

Here's kinda how I think it would work and of course it would have to be a little different for different areas of the state……but lets say for the southeastern corner of the state we do some fetal sampling studies and we determine that maximum twinning occurs when average doe weights are above 120 lbs or more…….Once average doe weight drops below this threshold then twinning rates begin to drop and if we keep going down we eventually reach the other end of the spectrum where at a 90 lb average they are all having singletons…….something like that anyways.
Once you establish whatever this range is then you set your goal to say 115 lbs and let it ride…..Until trending weights reach that threshold then there arent “too many”……Why did I drop it 5 lbs below optimal??......To make sure that we arent selling ourselves way short on buck fawn production……If you are at or above that 120 lb optimal range you really don’t know how much buck fawn production we’re leaving on the table…..in other words, how many more we can add before it starts going down.....may be a little or it may be a lot......Like I said before, I’d rather be just a little bit over than way, way under…...Allowing that buffer for it to trend downward a little below optimal helps ensure that you're bumping up against that maximum number of bucks we can produce and the herd still be "healthy"

This ^^^ is a general guide for how we produce the most buck fawns possible with the fewest amount of does………This gives us a starting point for the total number of bucks we all have to work with……We have maximized the land's potential so to speak………From there its all about how many of them get taken out……You can produce a 1000 bucks and kill 999 or you can produce 1000 and kill 1....or anything in between………It just depends on how many hunters you have and what kind of structure they’re under ……Right now we’re killing a high percentage of every 1000 and killing does doesn’t change that…….As long as your above our twinning threshold that's been discussed then all your doing by killing additional does is cutting buck fawn production and lowering the overall population……If you weights were well below that threshold though and lots of does were having singletons…..then it would make sense to cut doe numbers to improve ratios and increase twinning ….That’s how this is supposed to work……at least the way I understand it

Another metric that you should be able to use in conjunction with the average doe weight is the age structure of the doe herd……Going back to our original example of introducing a deer herd into an area and just allowing it start growing unchecked……As it grows and each year passes you will get does moving up and filling the next age class……So you’ll start getting 5 year olds…..6 year olds…..7 year olds and so forth…..By the time it grows to the level of reaching our twinning threshold you should have a good age structure in place……Therefore, while your doing the fetal study you can go ahead and record the age of the sampled does and if you start finding that your age structure is very young with few older does……then that would also be another indication to use in conjunction with your weight to verify that you don’t have too many yet or what have you……
If I’m not mistaken I think all of this is just about how things used to be run……I think at some point though the powers that be got together and decided that this population level that is best for the hunters doesn’t quite suite the other interests and so management changed to just baffling them will bullchit and having hunters drive the population as low as they will willingly take it…………Maybe it’s the best thing for Alabama as a whole I don’t know…… but the system we have now is a steaming pile of dogchit from a deer management perspective.
