I like hunting white oaks, or being up high in a climber, where the deer have no idea I am even there.

Thick cover where visibility is <50yds. Preferably where three or more transitions come together.

Flooded creek bottom in late November/early December with 100 year old red and white oaks. Permanent 20 foot ladder stand that I have killed over 20 bucks from. It is a terrible drag getting them out of the bottom, but it is so great a feeling!

I can't stand a thief.

Hard to top the responses so far.

One favorite of mine are the "surprise" hunts when you don't have your favorite spot available when you go to sign out, and out of frustration take foam pad and just do your best to go find a place to sit against a tree. And low and behold you have several close up encounters in the same hunt. You may not shoot, but those are the times when I remember what hunting is supposed to feel like. After typing that out, I guess I should do it on purpose more often.

Slipping around hay fields and cow pastures that have lots of drains and rolling hills. If hay bales were in the fields, you had something to hide behind and a good shooting rest. I miss the way Marengo county was in the 80’s before so many of the places described got planted in pines.

Whiskey makes it real. 😁

Actually my most enjoyable hunts lately have been easing into a place that’s good on a cold, pretty January morning, popping my Millennium tree seat in a likely place then hopefully popping a deer when it comes by. I do the blind & field or corn thing too, but the ground hunt in a likely spot back in the woods feels the most like “real hunting.”

30' high in a climber- watching the edge of some hardwoods and pines where I can still see down into a 2 to 3 tear old clear-cut.
