Going off just the body cam video, it looks to me like the deputy reacted to the firearm and not the situation at hand. I for one will always answer my door with a firearm on me and it will be in my hand at night. Im going wait for all the facts but my initial thought is that it don’t look good for the deputy. Prayers for all involved. That has to be tough on all parties and something I hope I never have to deal with on either side of the badge.

The cop identified himself as law enforcement, the guy opened the door with a weapon in his hand and got shot. Stupid has a price and he paid it.

He was on a military base. Do they allow private gun ownership on base. I thought some bases were gun free zones.

He was not on a military base. He was in an apartment in FWB. Off base. That's why it was a sheriff responding to the call.

Anybody can beat on a door and proclaim law enforcement. Dude coulda had hearing loss (i know i do and struggle especially when not face to face). We also have the castle doctrine. What if the deputy kicked the door in? Guy allowed to protect himself? If you're beating on my door in the middle of the night, imma be armed when i go to it.

The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

A lot of home invasions happening in Atlanta just like that
Some at even playing dress up as a cop.

These days are tough trying to be 100%
I still feel SD should’ve held off until the guy tried to point his gun. Just holding it to his side doesn’t look good.

The first time he knocked on the door he didn’t announce himself as the police and he stepped to the side so he could not be seen through the peep hole.

Is that standard protocol?

Terrible situation for all involved. I’m sure the officer can’t sleep at night and the victims family is about to get paid.

I been a LEO since 1995 either full time or part time. I always step to the side of the doorway no matter the nature of the call. I'm not going to play armchair quarterback as far as the shooting, but it is going to be interesting to see how it plays out.

I understand anyone can say "sheriff open the door"....but if you think it is not a sheriff, then why would you open the door....especially if you thought it may be someone who was going to rob/hurt you??

If I suspected it was not the law, then I would either not open the door or yell through the door and try to find out what they wanted. I would not open the door if I thought it was someone wishing me harm! I would call the police and prepare to shoot if they pushed in my door.

That was a bad shoot IMHO

Was it done because the kid was black? NO
Was it done because the cop just wanted to shoot somebody? NO

It happened because that officer most likely in the wrong profession with minimal training and as Marsh said, reacted to the gun and not the situation.

Just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD. Bill Jordan the shootist could draw fire and hit in .27 of a second and Fortson already had his gun out. Not to offend or step on anyone's toes all of us are looking at this as a past action where we know the outcome (static) unlike the officer whose in the moment (dynamic) Does it "look bad?" Yes. Was it awful but lawful? That's up to the Peoples attorney. The real question is 12 or 6? If you were in that moment and none of us were Judged by 12 or carried by 6?

Skinny is my EX.Alcohol was involved.

His girlfriend was on a FaceTime call with him when it happened.

I didn't notice the first time and don't care to watch it again, but did the door have a peephole? The lesson on that is if you have any doubt when a LEO identifies themself, verify it by looking through a peephole or if there isn't one, tell them that you are verifying it by calling 911. They'll wait, but if it might be one, don't answer the door with a gun in your hand. As in this case your intentions might be misinterpreted.

You bang on my door repeatedly in the early morning hours, I’m bringing a gun. I know you’re LEO and have experience with these situations but you are doing some mental gymnastics here.

How's that mental gymnastics, whatever you mean by that? By expecting to know more of the variables before forming an opinion? That's what intelligent people do. The not so intelligent people form opinions based on emotion.

If you think it’s not a cop call 911. They’ll let you know.
Lots of bad decisions made

So, let's turn the tables on this.

Suppose the victim had been able to react as the deputy was pulling his weapon and had shot the deputy.

Would it be justified?

one thing is fact , had he not been holding the gun hed be alive .

due to a cat and a burglar alarm ive had the county roll up with me twice at my sisters house . i can hear the alarm from my house so i went down . when they got there 30 and 45 minutes later i made damn sure i was seen as no threat . my gun was in the truck my hands were up and open in clear site . there was no problem what so ever . they ask for my id i gave it to them . if i was standing there with my glock in hand and turned their way i might have been shot . i guess i missed out on the darwin award
