Need some advice on what to do with wood mulch left on the ground after I had some guys come in with tree grinder/mulcher attachments on Bobcats to expand one of my greenfields by an additional 2/3 of an acre. Do I burn it, spread lime, then disc it in? What should I do to make sure the greenfield I plant there is as good as possible this fall?

Add nitrogen and if its possible disk it in a little and plant some millet to cover it all over……Disking, adding nitrogen, and putting it under a “canopy” of vegetation will speed up decomposition this summer.....The nitrogen tie-up will be your biggest concern

Do like most people and get a dozer and push off all the topsoil along with the mulch. Make sure you get down to the clay.

I'm kidding of course. Do what CNC says

Thank you CNC and YellaLineHunter. I would’ve never known to do any of that. Really appreciate your advice and guidance!

I had literally 10-12" of mostly pine mulch left when had mine done. The following fall i planted cereal rye, next spring i planted milo and millett.

Disk it and get some dirt on top of it and it will rot. Plant millet on it then lightly disk in the fall and play wheat and oats on it

This is what I've been doing on a reclaimed plot that got grown up with volunteer pines b/c of access issues that I had mulched. I disked it really good last fall and slung a 5 way mix on it. It actually did better than I expected. Before this last rain, I disked it really good again and slung out a bunch of millet with some other seeds I had leftover from my other spring planting I did. I'll keep doing that until I feel comfortable running my firminator thru there. It helps to have a really stout disk, I have a hydraulic pull behind.

As someone who actually does this professionally, we have seen a lot of different ways to handle it. For foodplots with little or moderate debris, the mulcher can churn it in to the top 3" or so of soil. It helps rot it and it can be seeded immediately. Lime and fertilize will help with growth and rotting the mulch into organic matter quicker and the organic material is good for the soil. If there is a lot of debris, we often burn it off before disking it in then lime, fertilize and seed. We run the 300 HP mulchers on feller buncher bodies which is cheaper per acre and can top stumps down a couple inches into the soil.

I’ve seen Gobbler’s company work on a tract in Monroe Co. There is no comparison between their machines and skid steers. It’s a beast
