It must be the water deteriorating / pitting the innards.
I just changed out some Deltas in our remodel that had been in 32 years. If they dripped out of the faucet , the little cup washer and spring would stop it, if it was leaking around the handle , replace the whole cartridge . Never failed to fix it.
