Glock 40 long slide is another good option for the gun for this scenario.

After we've talked about here I'm liking this option.......Most of the finishing shots are 30 yards or less but you get about 1 or 2 out 5 that are gonna hit a pond or something and require a longer shot.

I have the Glock G40 long slide with the Vortex Venom red dot. I can shoot very accurately out to 50 yards. The only thing with the Vortex Venom is no shake awake, you have to turn it on. I bought it for shooting hogs but have killed several deer with it. The trigger on mine is much better than my other "carry" Glocks. I only use my G40 10mm for hunting but I also have my rifle with me too.

Of course, several aftermarket options available.

FYI

I just ordered an XDM Elite package from Palmetto State Armory, can’t beat that deal.

You will like it!! I had to pull off the backstrap they shipped it with and put on a narrower one, but I don't have really giant hands. I wish ammo was cheaper so I could shoot it more.

The longer barrel gives you a little more forward wieght which tends to make you more accurate because the wieght dampens muzzle movement created by the natural shake of offhand shooting. The extra velocity in terms of a 4.5 vs a 6 inch barrel really isn't that great a difference but it is a little more speed. Also, will possibly be a little less muzzle flash in low light situations which can make a difference in your line of work. You just have to decide if it's worth carrying a longer gun for your needs. A very personal choice obviously.

I don't think that example takes everything into account. A carbine you shoulder isn't effected nearly as much by trigger pressure and is easier to hold steady than a pistol. The real comparison would be a 4" and 6" pistol, both with a red dot. In that example, I'm not sure barrel length would make any differance at all in accuracy and shootability.

My choice is G40 with the Holosun 407
It was a no brainer when I found out the G40 is lighter than the shorter G20.
How, I don’t know.

That's true. You could also argue that with a rifle there's 3 points of contact. There's several aspects that go into accuracy. For instance it could be possible to be more accurate with a smaller handgun, like the g30 for instance. It's considered the most accurate of the Glocks, due to barrel design.
But I can shoot my G41 more accurately because it has a bigger grip. This helps mitigate recoil. The bigger frame gives me more index with my left hand grip. Less recoil reduces flinching. IMO the added weight makes it easier to keep it on target if used properly. On smaller guns you have to fight the wobble. On a heavier pistol, you acquire your horizontal axis aiming above the target and allow the guns weight to lower the gun to the correct vertical axis.

A nice trigger can make a lot of difference as well

Do those G40's usually need the trigger modified or do they come pretty good out of the box?

I'm guessing it's gonna be like every Glock trigger (5 pounds). They say the gen 5 has better triggers but I can't really tell the difference. I shoot Glocks pretty good. But I shoot a lot. I picked up a Kimber with a 2.5 pound trigger. Very little trigger creep. It's nice and I like it at the range. I could see were it might be too light in some situations though.
To me, whatever gun you get. You need to shoot it, alot. Pistol shooting is a diminishing skill. So before and during season. You're gonna wanna hit the range.
You're gonna wanna shoot at targets similar to what you're gonna encounter. So put a target on the ground, one that simulates a standing deer etc. Even standing on a hill shooting into a bottom changes poi.

What? Did Goatkiller tell you that? Glock has a website and you can actually compare the pistols…

Absolutely not, that’s comparing apples to oranges.
If you have a Glock 40 competing against a competent shooter with a Glock 20 then we will see who the better marksman is and it won’t be because of barrel length.

It's not a good comparison.

A better one would be a Smith 642 airweight and a model 27.

Generally speaking, longer barrels = more accuracy in pistols.

very good rebuttal. After looking at them side by side in the pic you posted, I'm not sure their would be much difference. I guess I could argue that in theory the long slide might give you and advantage in instinctive aiming and quicker follow up shots due to less recoil, but I'm not sure that the real world results would be enough to be measured. Especially out past 25 yards. That would still have to be compared to the increased weight while carrying. So I'll concede to your assessment.
