I just cannot fathom going out anywhere in the Gulf, or any big water for that matter, without wearing a PFD. Now, I have, on very rare occasions, in slow current in shallow creeks/rivers kayaked without wearing mine (2 1/2 - 3 feet deep), but most of the time you will find me wearing mine even though it isn't required to be worn, just to be with you on your kayak.

I am very glad he was found alive even though he made decisions I wouldn't have.

And no cell phone. Who goes anywhere much less alone in a dangerous activity without a cell phone? Makes you go hmmm…

As I told someone yesterday, I hope he returns safely to his wife and kids. And then I hope she slaps some sense into him.

I bet The Lord and Coast Guard already took care of that.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Not having a cell phone I understand a lot more than not having a PFD. Some people enjoy unplugging and not being bothered with having to worry about keeping a phone safe around water.

I think he definitely underestimated the things that could happen while afloat, though.

When DoA goes kayaking, even on local rivers to us by himself, he takes his Garmin InReach that keeps me updated on his general location throughout his trip. It does come with a monthly fee, though, but it is worth the cost for the knowledge it provides. Should something go amiss I have a better idea of where to have the authorities start searching.

Most cell service disappears about 3-5 miles out I think he drifted out to 12 so probably had no service. That said, I believe it was a small craft advisory day with high winds so he had no business being out at all much less without a handheld VHF and a satellite PLB

A lot of folks don’t realize how strong the currents in the gulf can be. The wind is one thing, but you’ll tire out pretty quick paddling against a strong current.

Hindsight is 20/20, but in my opinion anyone fooling around in the Gulf, especially on a kayak, needs to keep a PLB on them as SOP.

A simple hand held marine radio is always nice to have and a life saver. It's amazing how many people go out without a float plan, no pfd, and no comms. We picked up so many floaters that would have been survivors simply wearing a pfd. We usually spotted the bright orange
pfd within the first 30min of our searches and 99% of the time not one person smart enough to be in it.
