Hard to tell in that pic , if it's old school stick built it's part of the wind beam bracing. If it's trusses it's part of the web. Either way , you got it . Looks like that board had a knot or some imperfection midway of the split.

Right. It's a compression post in a truss.

It is in compression and the diagonals on either side are in tension.

When we stick built in the 80s we called it strongback and the pig trough was where it connected to the joist. 🤷‍♂️
