Been hunting them since I was old enough to be carried through the woods on a spring morning. Have been blessed by the Lord and allowed to kill my share of mature birds for the last 45 yrs. I have never put out a camera, put out feed, or stand hunted them like deer. I do not agree with, nor condone field ambushing or fanning them. I have never shot a bird in the Fall, nor one that was not love sick and pursuing me. My pawpaw would come back from the grave and bitch slap me daily for these actions. You have not lived till you watch the woods wake up on a spring morning, duplicate the sound of a great horned owl punching his time clock as he calls it a night, hear the monarch of the woods gobble from a tree at daylight raising even the finest hairs on the back of your neck to attention, begin a military style manuver that would make Rambo jealous to get as close to him as possible (but not to close), to set up in the right spot, to call to him the right way; trying to convince him to reverse mother nature and come to you instead of allowing his harem to assemble around him as he struts in his laire. To hear the wings beat like a military chopper in slow motion as he descends his night perch, to hear the leaves crunch just out of sight as he starts your way, to hear him spit (a sound they make while strutting that can only be heard from a distance of less than 50 yds), to hear him drum (another low gutteral noise many people have never been blessed to hear, sometimes known to stop a healthy man's heart from beating at times) to witness the mixture of 7-8 colors that appear to be illuminated via black lights (and most have not been identified or duplicated even by people much smarter than me) on his head the moment he drums, to feel him jar the ground similar to that of a mild earthquake with a gobble you weren't expecting 20 yds away; all while knowing if you think about possibly blinking or breathing to heavy, he will see you, he will feel you, and he will be gone into the next zip code before you can push safety off or even realize you've been had. And even if and when you have the ultimate reward of lowering the boom on his face; to feel the excitement closest resembling that you had when your first child was born, but at the same time being completely saddened that the ultimate game is now over for the day and another one of the most amazing creatures on the planet is returning to dust; all is well and good in your soul! Yep, I kinda enjoy spring turkey hunting Done Right! You have to have experienced it to understand it. Very few things compare. Sex with a hot woman is almost as addictive and fun!

I’m an old school purist, kill ‘em the way they were meant to be killed. Call ‘em up with your back against a tree and shoot ‘em. I have zero respect for blind/chufa patch hunters. When it comes to youth, my Facebook gets littered with 5 year olds who killed a bird from a blind with a .410 on a vice with dad watching the red dot on his phone. That’s a whole different problem. I guess In the end you do you cause you’re gonna do it anyway. This is me. I learned at 8 yo to call and hunt without a pad…no blind nor decoy. I love it. Yeah I’ll belly crawl to circle one or to slip up a tree. I fully plan on introducing my son to it the same way…sure we will spook a bunch of birds but he will be a much better hunter and woodsman at the end of it. Preston Pittman always said if you ain’t bumping them you ain’t hunting them

I sit in a blind on a greenfield pretty regularly. My percentage went up when I started doing that.

On the distance I like to walk to my stands: “The first 100 yards is also the last 100 yards.”
