if you can reach the spot from the inside, rough the area up with a grinder/sander. Repair with fiberglass mat under roving/cloth. Grind a slight depression around the hole on the outside. Repair with roving/cloth under mat.. Sand flush, gelcoat.

OR

Tape over hole from outside. paint gelcoat from inside then build up fiberglass repair with mat under roving cloth. finish outside with bondo/gelcoat.

Yes, and tape up any clothing openings you can. For the repair finish: put some kind of gelcoat or marine paint over it. Unfinished fiberglass WILL absorb water.

Very good advice. A hot shower will light you up after grinding fiberglass. Cold is far better.

hunterturf,
You need to look into the "bridge method" of fiberglass repair. You could likely find photos on a sailboat forum. This method basically involves folding a piece of cardboard in half and inserting it into the hole, then pulling it against the hole to use as a backer for the fiberglass repair job. The cardboard needs to be a little larger than the hole. At least two holes are poked into the cardboard and you run some string through it. The string is pulled out the hole and you make a little frame of cardboard or wood that rests against the outside of the hull to tie the string to and that also gives you access to the hole for the repair (the bridge). A wooden dowel and two pieces of cardboard work good for this. The string pulls the cardboard inside the vessel against the hole. This works on flat sections of a hull, or you can put a fold in the cardboard for use on a hull chine.

I had to do this on a Sunfish that I restored years ago. It had three holes in it and there was basically no access from the inside due to the flotation foam. Rough and clean the edges of the hole prior to putting in the cardboard backer, by the way. Once you have the cardboard pulled against the hole, then start cutting fiberglass mat to the shape of the hole and build it up. The resin will penetrate the string. I finished all my repairs with fairing compound from Jamestown Distributors.

You're welcome...
