What’s the deal with this caliber? Why is it so popular, why would you want it over a .308 per say? Limited range and quieter? What’s the advantages of this round? Seems to be alot of em out there. Or is a cool fad like a lot of other stuff in the outdoor world today.

300 blackout suppressed out of a bolt action makes me tingle inside. Unsuppressed I would grab a 308.

The pros of 300blk include:
Built with suppressed/subsonic shooting in mind
Works well with AR-15 platform, parent case is .223, uses .223 bolt and magazines
Is a reloaders dream with bullet options from 85-245gr
In supersonic, provides roughly 30% more energy on target over 5.56mm
Reduced recoil vs .308 and is very effective out of short barreled weapons.
Cons:
factory ammo is sometimes pricey
Has a limited range vs. .308(but that range extends to at least 250yards with 110gr in a 16” barrel.)

A 10.5” barrel AR in a .300blk makes a great treestand gun in the woods. Fits nicely in the lap!

Aside from the subsonic thing, the 300 is just a sweetheart round. Low recoil, decent ballistics for short range work and very easy on the wallet to reload. Bulk Speer 125 TNT bullets can be had for around 15 cents a piece and loaded over 18.5 grains of H110. In a day where powder is $50+ per pound that makes a lot of sense.

How far can you shoot a coyote with one suppressed, efectively? I don't want to have to judge distance and hold over, etc. Would like one to shoot 200 yards and in suppressed, if that is possible.

Subsonic (any round) is gonna be like a mortar at 200 yards.

That is kinda what I figured. So all these videos of people thermal hunting suppressed are still shooting supers? Does a can really help when shooting supers? Sorry for my dumbness.

A can will quiet supers down and can further mitigate felt recoil as well. I shoot a 22” 6.5 Grendel suppressed and sounds like a .22lr
You can shoot subsonics as far as you can compensate/dial for. I don’t shoot them much past 100m because that’s where my BDC reticle fails me

To give you some idea of drop with subsonic ammo, zeroed at 100 you are gonna be 3-4 inches high at 50, about 33 inches low at 200 and a little over 100 inches low at 300 yards. These drop numbers are generally accurate for most any subsonic caliber that is shooting right at 1050 fps, not just 300BO.

Simple, subsonic is for closer range supersonic much better ballistics and more punch with AL deer/predator/hog hunting distance situations. Suppressed super 300blk is way quieter than .308 suppressed. I love the round have a number of different rifle configs for it.
