I gathered some seeds for a customer of mine a couple months ago. His wife intends on growing them and grafting asian persimmons on them. They will certainly grow from seeds. I imagine they need to go through some cold weather,
Stratification

Thanks JW. I found seeds under a persimmon tree this week. Have these seeds had enough cold weather for stratification?

I've heard that persimmon seeds have to "pass" thru an animals digestive system in order for them to germinate.

I cleaned a bunch last year. Picked the fallen fruit fresh, separated and cleaned the seeds. Stored them in moist paper towel in ziplocks in the fridge for about 70 days then put them in a shallow planting tray(I read about this online). It’s a process used farther north. They all failed quickly after germination.
This year I just happened upon a few areas where there were just seeds laying on the ground(late January)
I gathered them and have them planted in 3.5x12” air pruning pots I previously started acorns in. Persimmon grow a heck of a taproot before they start growing upwards. I want to be ahead of that this time.

Keep in mind only 50% of trees will be fruit bearing (female).

My understanding is that it’s not even 50/50. I’ve read that it’s more like 30% female and that mirrors what I’m finding on my own property. The natural regeneration on one section, now 8-9 years, has a good number of young persimmons. I’ve identified at least 40 in just an acre. I have two (2) producing females not counting the grafted ones I bought myself. I haven’t been up at the right time to check blooms on some of the ones that should be fruit producing size but I suspect better than 80% of mine are male.
I intend to use any seedlings as stock for grafting from my females.

I'm trying to find some seeds now. I want to sprout and then graft females to them. But the crazy thing is I can't find any, I feel like normally I see them everywhere in coyote crap.
