They hay is only to slow the digestion down so they can process the feed. Calling ahead and getting a processing date booked is a smart move. I have mine booked months in advance, and keep a backlog of orders.

Do you dry lot your calves for the last 120 days? Back when we showed steers, the last 3-4 months before the shows, they never stepped foot in the pasture again. The only thing they had to eat was the feed we blended. We made it according to the AU Bull test ration. That is by far, the best beef, I've ever eaten.

To the OP, I'd buy a yellow calf, or a black calf. Both will yield great beef. Yellow calf will be a Charolais cross calf. The other half of the cross would be Red Angus, Hereford, or some brand of red cattle. Don't buy a calf with a short slick coat of hair. I don't like much or any Brahman in feeder calves.

Yes sir.

I may try some of that beef of yours one day. I bet it's good.

I appreciate all the info.

Where is the best place to buy one to feed out? Livestock auction?

You can buy one at auction but your best bet if you do that is finding someone who knows cattle to go with you. Or even better someone who knows a farmer who would sell you one direct

Buy one from one of your local cattleman. Anything that goes through the auction is probably going to get sick within the first week. I second the Angus/ angus cross. Just an allusion was right. You want a calf to weigh 1100-1200 lb's. They'll dress around 60%. Have your butcher keep them hanging for at least 2 weeks. It will make a big difference in tenderness.

I like to feed them out to 25-28 months usually 1300-1500lbs. I keep 14% out for them in the creep feeder from the time they hit the ground and let them have all they want if weā€™re talking about steers. I keep old coastal and peanut hay out for them and try to keep it to where they donā€™t have to travel far to get fed and watered. Iā€™ve got a group on Dr. Jimmy Hornerā€™s program right now, a lot of my buddies out west are big fans of his. Heā€™s on an episode of the ā€œHerd Nerdzā€ podcast if you can bear to listen to that ladyā€™s voice for a little while. lol I run/feed out f1 and f2 Wagyu/angus. Some of the info about restricting vitamin A in the 2nd phase of feedout is mostly to do with the wagyu breed but thereā€™s still a lot of good info on that episode. Iā€™d sell you a steer if you werenā€™t too far away, I try not to buy from the stockyard. Youā€™ll get better animals direct and they havenā€™t been exposed to who knows what at the sale barn. Imo

Get ready to shell out an ass load of money for a little return. And in your mind itā€™s gonna be the best steak you ever ate. But you can go down to your local piggly wiggly or wherever your smaller grocery store is, and walk in and tell them what cut of steak and how thick you want it. Way cheaper and just as good. Folks get crazy over this steer growing stuff. We ate em for years cause we had left over show calves and thatā€™s was just what we did. I farm for a living and donā€™t grow em out. Donā€™t see the need in it, then the waygu craze hit, it donā€™t matter if itā€™s a waygu or a belted Galloway, they need to be 30 plus months old and grain fed for the best marbling. Do what you want friend, nothing to me. But Iā€™d buy some already done up and fed out and try it before I sunk too much money into it. Iā€™ve fed out a pile of em over the years, just ainā€™t for me anymore. Good luck

I was recently in Oklahoma and my wife wanted to go to see the Pioneer Woman's places. I forgot the name of the town she basically owns and has remodeled. Very beautiful places.

When we drove by the Drummond Ranch, we turned on Land Guide to see how much of the land they owned. Their farm stretched for miles and miles as far as you could see. Looked like a sage flat for as far as you could see in both directions and the cattle stretched as far as you could see also. They own more land than the Federal Government and more cattle than there are in AL. I could not imagine just riding the perimeter to check fences on the Drummond Ranch.

Copy. Ole #53 was running loose near Butler Mill a month or two ago and I didn't know who to contact.
