Seems like the last 3-4 years I start seeing gobblers with hens earlier and earlier. Definitely seems like a change. In my area anyway.

I will admit Im not much of a Turkey hunter but I saw Toms strutting with Hens 4 weeks before season opened. When it did open I could barely get a bird to gobble and didnt even kill a bird. You veterans explain to me why season is so late in Bankhead?????
Its not the will to win but the will to prepare to win!

They definitely start breeding the beginning of February. I've also seen Doves sitting on Eggs the beginning of February. Iāve never seen it that early here. 1st of March here for sure. Iām talking actual breeding not the pomp and circumstance.

SCIENCE!!
The turkey rut is exactly the same from the southern tip of Florida to the northern tip of Maine. Because thereās not a minutes difference between Mobile county and Jackson county, AL - according to science. Yāall pay attention. If they actually study the hens and when they are bred and when they lay eggs then the science is likely pretty dang accurate.

My turkeys in South Alabama have been strutting with hens since early December.

You veterans explain to me why season is so late in Bankhead????? Iāve been turkey hunting in western Winston County for 20+ years and it really makes my blood boil that our season opens so lateā¦Nobody can ever provide a legitimate answer to this question!!! If anyone ever tells you āitās because DCNR wants the turkey population in that area to increaseā, then ignore the heck out of them!!! Thereās way more turkeys in that area than many other places across the state whose season opens in March š¤¬
