Seems like the last 3-4 years I start seeing gobblers with hens earlier and earlier.
Definitely seems like a change. In my area anyway.

I had a few strutting a week or two ago. Of course I’ve got video of a Tom breeding a hen in November. That may not be strange at all but it seemed off to me

I will admit Im not much of a Turkey hunter but I saw Toms strutting with Hens 4 weeks before season opened. When it did open I could barely get a bird to gobble and didnt even kill a bird. You veterans explain to me why season is so late in Bankhead?????

Its not the will to win but the will to prepare to win!

I don't find that strange for here . I don't really find it strange that they strut other than spring time

They definitely start breeding the beginning of February. I've also seen Doves sitting on Eggs the beginning of February.

SCIENCE!!

The turkey rut is exactly the same from the southern tip of Florida to the northern tip of Maine. Because there’s not a minutes difference between Mobile county and Jackson county, AL - according to science. Y’all pay attention.

I’ve never seen it that early here. 1st of March here for sure. I’m talking actual breeding not the pomp and circumstance.

Gobblers are with hens all year. Whenever their winter groups cross paths they strut and gobble and act like boys. They will separate again likely before gobblers split up but just like does going into heat the turkeys know when it is time to breed and it ain't time yet so them being together means nothing currently

If they actually study the hens and when they are bred and when they lay eggs then the science is likely pretty dang accurate.

My turkeys in South Alabama have been strutting with hens since early December.

I’ve been turkey hunting in western Winston County for 20+ years and it really makes my blood boil that our season opens so late…Nobody can ever provide a legitimate answer to this question!!! If anyone ever tells you “it’s because DCNR wants the turkey population in that area to increase”, then ignore the heck out of them!!! There’s way more turkeys in that area than many other places across the state whose season opens in March 🤬
