Good evening

I’m not a civil engineer nor do I play one on TV.
Last week the Seawall on the lake house was replaced.
They placed riprap in front of the new wall.

Was enough rip rap placed?
Is this rip rap sized correctly? It seems too small.

Pitiful. If someone really put that there for erosion control they wasted their time.

Not even in the ballpark, you are several dump trucks short of the amount you will need - waves will wash under the footings of your new seawall and it will eventually collapse. They also should have put material (think of a VERY thick painters tarp) under the rip rap to keep it from sinking and help retain the soil.

If I remember correctly your place is on Martin - which is raised and lowered annually. When Alabama Power raises the water over the next couple of months the waves will begin washing it out, in the Fall when they lower the waves will continue to wash it away - until the footings are exposed, then it is just a matter of time without the proper amount of protection.

Geotextile fabric.

And that would probably be enough rock for a pond. On a lake with wake boats driving around, not even close.

What they did was as little as possible in order to be able to say they did the job according to spec. That amount of rip rap is for looks only and wont be good for crap. That contractor should be ashamed of himself, but i would bet its business as usual.

I’d want it atleast 1/3 up the wall and out about the same. They definitely added just enough to check the code box. More is definitely better than less in this situation

If that meets code , that's a rare example where code is grossly inadequate.

Are you sure they aren’t coming back to add more? Are they claiming the job is complete? I don’t have any experience with that kind of stuff on the lake but it looks thin to me.

Im not saying it met code. Im saying they were supposed to use rip rap and theres some laying there, thats about it. Work ethics in America these days sucks.

You’ve got less than 1/10th the riprap you should have. Just based on what is shown in the pic with the riprap situation, I’d question the entire build. That wall should have tie-backs and an anchor system. If it does not, I wouldn’t pay him a dime. “Looks nice” and “properly engineered and built” are two totally different things.

Was there a drawing or a spec telling what was required?

How far below the dirt does the wall extend? And is there rock below the dirt as well?
