I went with the 44mag. If I recall most would consider it effective on deer at a 100-125yds. That is well above my effective range. Seems like 50-75yds with good shot placement on the 357mag. That’s truly enough for me but hope to get better and have enough gun for it.

.357 is too light. You have to understand there is a difference between shooting that in a Rifle vs. a Handgun. It has never really been accepted as a sufficient round for whitetail hunting in a handgun.

I feel like we are searching for the .243 of handgun calibers. Don't. There is less margin with handguns.

41 mag or 44 Special is the bottom.

Look.... I know someone's bucktoothed grandiddy kilt 100's with a .25 Auto at point blank range while out drinking Paraquat riding dirt roads. Get your Mare's Leg and go away.

You boys shooting open sites or scoped? I’ll be honest, I’m not confident in my pistol shooting ability to hit a deer at 50-75 yds with ooen sites. I question my ability with it scoped. lol.

Shot a doe with a 38special once.
Did the job.
Agree with goatkiller on the 243 comparison,
Although i love a 243.
A 40cal round should be min handgun.

i worked on a farm early in life and my practice was from a tractor set mostly . i used a 357 or glock 21 .

I go scoped. My 10mm has a micro red dot but it is more of a backup to my rifle than a dedicated hunter. My deer move so late that open sights on anything is more handicap than I'm interested in.

Start with the .44 special 45 colt then .41/44. No the 357 isn't enough from a handgun, rifle yes but need barrel length to burn the powder. 2-7 Leopold or your favorite rifle scope. You can get a single shot I'm. 308 it's kinda like cheating.

Skinny is my EX.Alcohol was involved.

I like the 357 from a single shot with a longer barrel myself. Still looking for a CVA scout pistol with a 14" barrel. It's a good bow range type caliber out of a revolver IMO.

I hunt with a 7x30 Waters and a 44 Magnum and no doubt they both will kill a deer or a hog. But, and this is a big but, I haven't shot anything with either yet. I have been laying with the 7x30 the last couple of weeks, but nothing I want to shoot has given me a shot. The 7x30 I will try to about a 100 yards, the 44 Mag about 50. Both are scoped.

Lol , a 357 hand gun with a 6 inch barrel is enough gun . 50 yards or less with a good bullet it'll kill them .

I have killed many with a 44. That was my go to weapon for hunting from a climber in the woods. Easy to carry and plenty of knock down.

I love my country, but don't trust my government.

My 10mm was open and my .44mag is scoped. The gun may be good for 100yds, but I’m good for about 50yd. That’s part of why I like it. It’s a lot like bow hunting with having to get them in close.

I'm a big fan of 44 mag for handgun hunting, and a good general round especially if you're looking to tote a revolver. I'm a big fan of the contender for handgun hunting though, 44 mag from a 10" barrel without a cylinder gap is especially decisive! I'm also a big fan of 30-30, 30 Herrett, 357 Herrett, and I always wanted to play around with a 7-30 waters.
