Looking to buy a retirement truck. I’ve decided on a F150 Lariat but I haven’t decided on which engine I want. Ford offers the 2.7 & 3.5 ecoboost & the 5.0 v8. My 2011 has the 5,0 & I have had no problems with this engine. The Ecoboost engines get better mpg on paper. I would like to get some real Aldeer reviews on the Ecoboost engines.

My 2019 3.5 had the cam phaser rattle. $2700 repair with new timing chains. Ford paid $900. I paid the rest. That was with 80k miles. Other than that, very solid. Ran great and rode great as well. Around 18.5 avg mpg. Just rattled like crazy on start up. They redesigned the phasers, so if you go that route, make sure it has the new ones.

Past few turkey trips we’ve rented Expedition Max with the 3.5 ecoboost and the gas mileage seemed accurate and from a power standpoint it never felt like it was struggling when passing others or climbing hills. On our S Dakota trip we all tagged out so headed up to black hills to Mt Rushmore and it handled very well. Long term daily drivers may have another opinion but overall I was pleased.

Good stuff, i need the good, the bad & the ugly on the 3.5 because I'm really trying to like this engine.

My 2019 3.5 is on its third set of cam phasers. The originals and replacements in 22 and 23. I’ve about concluded over the last few weeks that it needs a fourth set and when my warranty runs out I’ll be in another truck. Other than that, I really love this truck. I’m at about 74k miles.

Don’t actually count on good gas mileage at all. Think mine got 14.5ish.

It’s got tons of power though. Some of the early ones had some funky little issues with sucking sludge and etc. a lot of people were installing catch cans on them. May be worth researching to see if it’s ever been actually figured out

All newer Ford engines have cam phaser issues so don't let that hamper your decision. My 2018 F150 5.0 had cam phasers, cam phaser actuators, timing chain, upgraded pcv valve, and water pump replaced summer of 22 at 121k miles.

My 2.7 has over 200k miles with no issues. And it gets 19 mpg. I've used it to tow my 24' cape horn to the beach from wetumpka.

Hopefully they have gotten better I had a2015 3.5 that Ford finally admitted they couldn't fix after I spent thousands of dollars trying to fix it, they "bought me out with a 2018 with a 5.0 which has been flawless.

Some people on here will swear by them. I’m not one of those people. I’ve got a 2010 F150 with a 5.4, a 2018 Expedition with the 3.5, and a 2020 F150 XLT Lariat (company truck) with the 3.5. The 3.5 gets better mileage and is faster but if you’re going to USE the truck for pulling and hauling, I’d take my 5.4 every day of the week and twice on Sunday, before I used the 3.5.

My 21 Latiat 4x4 has the 2.7 in it and so far I haven't had any problems. It has incredible power and has been great towing. I average 21.2 MPG.

2016 XLT with 3.5 and it’s been trouble free through almost 130k miles. Much stronger towing and faster than 5.0. Better mileage too. Wouldn’t trade mine for a 5.0 just like it. I don’t know if my generation (15-17) didn’t have phaser troubles or not. I run 5w30 Mobil 1 full synthetic and change it every 5k miles. I bought a used 19 King Ranch that had bad phasers (and leaking sunroof and then the forward camera quit working and they couldn’t fix it) but sold it. If I was buying new I’d get the longest extended warranty on hey offer and keep the oil changed.

Better than a GM truck with bad cams and lifters due to AFM and bad transmissions to boot. Phaser rattle is aggravating but you can do something about it. Crappy transmission not so much.

My hunting buddy is on his 3rd turbo. Nothing but problems is what I hear, but they do have good power. I wouldnt buy one without the 5.0. But I keep my trucks for a long time and put a bunch of miles on them.

I have a 2019 with the 2.7 eco boost and love it so far. I've put 100k on it without issue and drive over 40k miles/ a year for work. Will be getting another 1 just like it soon.

I have the 2019 Lariat with the 2.7. I only tow my boat with it. 41k and zero issues.

Not sure how throwing $ at repairs on cam phasers is any different than throwing money at a bad transmission. For what vehicles cost you shouldn’t have to fix anything.

My 2020 F150 with 3.5 has been great. 70,000 miles and going strong. Turbo motors require frequent oil changes. The truck will pull whatever you put behind it. Gas mileage when not pulling is around 18-20.

I’ve about come to the conclusion that any direct injection motor, naturally aspirated and especially forced inductions, needs a catch can if you want better chances at longevity. About to put one on my 6.2. I hate hearing about the ecoboost issues continuing. I had a 13 and loved it. But it started rattling and I let it go. You’d think by now ford would have figured out the cam phaser issue. It really is a good motor, as long as it’s right.

I’ve got a 2013 3.5 F150. Currently has 183,000 miles, runs perfect, like new. Only thing I’ve had to do to it is valve cover was leaking on 1 side. Absolutely nothing else. Running all high dollar synthetic pays off!!!
