You are correct, JWalker. The biologist said he’s a minimum 6 years old. He said it could very easily be older. It takes a long time to get that heavy around here.

There’s your answer.

I killed a deer a few years ago that weighed 196lbs. It was 5yo, maybe 6yo. I had a pretty good picture record of it. I know it was atleast 5yo. My uncle showed its jawbone to a wildlife biologist, he said it was 3yo. They always age young around here for some reason. Had that happen a couple times. But it takes some birthdays for a deer to get fat or a rack with really good mass around here, thats not precise at all but its a pretty good rule of thumb

I’ve been aging deer on the same properties for quite a few years. I’ve lost all confidence in accurately aging deer to the year after 2 years of age. They consistently age younger than I know they are based on pics, but hardly ever older. So that tells me that the nature in which their teeth wear can be directly impacted by genetics, soils, diet or other factors.

When my uncle told me that guy said that deer was 3yo. I said well i have pictures of it for 5yrs. He said you cant tell thats the same deer by pictures. I said well, ive never got another picture of that deer since i killed it so theres a pretty good chance thats him.

I guarantee you can get a better age estimation by tracking a deer from year to year than you can by looking at their teeth. Deer are east to follow year to year. There’s no two that have ever looked the same. Their antlers are like finger prints. Some are similar, but they’ve all got unique features that can be followed year to year, with few exceptions.

I think weight tells little story also - maybe not 100% but an indicator n my opinion.

You know it. I’ve looked deer that have all the characteristics of an older buck yet the teeth say otherwise. I hard a deer today looking at his body and rack was missing. Very pronounced brisket etc…. Teeth said 3.5 so I looked on the other side. Same.

I’ve recently read where CA was not 100% but closer to 85%
