They weren’t hunting with me but I’ve been around on 2 different occasions where 3 people have drowned when I had a camp on Seminole. They drug one of the hs age boys up on our dock. That was tough to see

Got shot by a poacher with a rifle while putting out standers on a dog drive in 1982. 5 of us walking single file down a creek bottom and he thought it was a deer, or so he said! Investigating Game Wardens and Deputy's said they thought he did it on purpose, but no proof. Bullet went between the bone and artery in my upper arm. Spent 12 days in the hospital and 6 weeks out of work!!

Fell about 15 feet from a climber while climbing up about 30 minutes before light one morning. The bottom just slipped out from under me. My chin hit the top piece falling through and evidently knocked me out cause I woke up at the bottom of the tree and it was light out at this point. Probably being a little concussed I thought to my self it’s still early I’ll just sit here at the bottom of the tree and try to hunt a little. After a couple of minutes of coming to my chest started feeling wet and I realized I was covered in blood. Where I had hit my chin on the stand during the fall was split wide open and gushing blood. At this point I tried to stand up and couldn’t put any pressure on my left leg. So I crawled out of the woods to my truck, and drove my self to the ER. They got me stitched up and I was one crutches for 2 weeks because of my knee, but counted that as a win. When I fell I landed on the bottom of my stand so hard that it bent it almost into a V. I think being knocked out during the fall prevented me from breaking my legs as I was just limp.

I had never killed a deer despite hunting since I was young, and killing any legal deer would have been an accomplishment for me, and I'd hunted this property outside of doe days and knew there were lots of does that came out just before dark. I was hunting a large area of sage/field with woods along one side, with the road running along the woods' edge. Just before shooting light ended, a deer stepped out of the woods into the road about 200 yards away. I shouldered my rifle and put the deer in the crosshairs.

The "deer" was the teenage son of the farmer, he was wearing zero orange and was decked out in a buff-colored jacket and pants. He had walked down the road to come get me, and he was hidden in the shadow of the woods until he stepped out into the road as he got closer to the stand.

I lowered my rifle. While I never took the rifle off safe or put my finger on the trigger, I felt like I was about to faint from the fact I'd put my crosshairs on him thinking it was a deer.

I've told that story to my kids more than once, and I remind my son about it every season, even though we are still hunting out of the same stand for now.

I did the very same thing on a mexican bent over planting trees in a cutover one time when I was probably 15yr old. Didnt click the safety off but gave me a bad feeling seeing a human in crosshairs....

Cut a finger pretty bad once when I was field dressing a buck - had both hands up in his rib cage (couldn’t split him open because he was a wallhanger), and had cut myself before I even felt it. Learned that lesson the hard way, but thankfully haven’t made that mistake again. Another time I stepped into a low spot and got a sprained knee from it. Other than those two I’ve been fairly safe out there.

Dang..i read boathands story and it reminded me of one forgot..an i mean..it was bad..i was bowhunting corps land probly 10 years ago..beavers had made a dam across a slough and i looked out across what i thought was just dead weeds matted over mud…i took a step out on it..an it was solid as a rock..i thought..oh yeh im good.. i tore out walkin…i took six or sk steps an i realized i was bouncing i thought..surely i aint on a log..boom..the end of the log broke out from under me and i fell through that mat in about 10ft of water totin a hoyt,ol man climber, and a backpack..the treestand like to have got me killed cause it got pinned to the log and it was holdin me under…i got the straps off tho an pulled myself up above the water…this was like december.. i held on to the log an got my stand on too of the mat and I crawled up on it an used that ol man like a snow shoe for my body…i dropped my bow an it was layin on top of the mat where i fell through..if i hadnt come back up in that one hole id have probly drowned tryin to get another hole made…I crawled back to the bank an i think i laid there for about an hour soaked to the bone and absolutely exhausted …the water was freezing but it was an abnormally warm day an it was like 70 degrees..i got my crap together an went to the truck an went home…that was the worst experience ive ever had an im real lucky that stand didnt sink me down there in the mud

Two buddies and I swamped a john boat when duck hunting a flooded creek in Choctaw County. The current can be very deceiving. We went in the water at 37 degrees air temp. and one had on waders. We lost everything but our lives. Don't underestimate the risk of cold water and current

Fell out of a lock on stand backwards, landed in chert rocks. Landed on my left shoulder and back of my head. Made me start having seizures and take seizure medication now. Was accidentally shot by my dad Turkey hunting one day on Lookout Mountain. I was probably 75 yards away and got blistered all over the right side of my face. How none of those pellets hit my eyes I'll never know. We neither one knew the other one was there. I was slipping up to a tree to set up on one I heard gobbling, about the time I sit down BOOM. I screamed from the pain, and I heard someone holler back. It was dad. He was the reason the bird was gobbling. He killed the Turkey, but almost me too.

Checking out ladder stands before the season last year. Club work day. I was up 15 ft in an old 2 man stand that we were moving to another tree. One guy was holding the ladder while I climbed up to secure it at the top. As I was putting the strap around the tree the stand started falling backwards. The guy holding the ladder said he had it but the tubing connecting the top part to the ladder had become weak from corrosion and was giving way under my weight. I saw a 3 inch sappling as I was falling backward and was able to grab it and ride it down, slowing my fall. Nothing hurt but my pride but could have been bad.

Worst I’ve witnessed.

Back in dog running days…..dogs headed straight for 15 yr old kid standing solo. Deer turns before crossing rd on him. Apparently he disengaged the safety on the 12ga in anticipation of the deer popping out.

Gets bored and proceeds to rest shotgun barrel on top of big toe and does the unthinkable….pulls the trigger.

I was about 10 at the time and dad and I went to pick him up since we were the closest standers. He’s standing in the ditch with his boot off and is white as a ghost. We took him to the ER and they removed what was left of his big toe.

Gutting a nice buck. I was cutting the chest cavity open when the knife came free and the momentum resulted cutting my leg and nicking my femoral artery. I got the bleeding stopped with a tourniquet. It was a mess. My wife came home and saw me on the couch with blood every where and took me to the doctor.

Was at a dove shoot once a group of use were standing around getting our stuff ready to go to the field. There was a guy ( not me) in the group who wasn't a seasoned hunter . He had borrowed a 12 ga, Model 97 Winchester pump, one of the most dangerous shotguns ever made. He shucked a shell in the chamber and had his finger on the trigger. BOOM , at least he had it pointing in the ground , blew dirt all over us! Couple of guys were so shook up they left.

That isn't actually a accident , just a frightening near miss. eek

Hunted out of a tree stand for years without a harness. First time I wore a harness I stood up to shoot at a coyote and a weld cracked on the bottom of my summit viper. Front of the stand dropped atleast 5 or 6 inches before it stopped and the harness was the only thing that kept me from falling out face first.

I took a shortcut through a patch of woods that I hadn’t been through in several years. The small creek that I had always been able to get across with a small jump had washed out over the years and was now probably 8’ wide and maybe 8’ deep. As I was standing there trying to decide what to do without having to backtrack, the bank edge gave way underneath me and I fell into about 4’ of water with a tree stand on my back. I was completely submerged laying, on my back, with the tree stand holding me under. By the grace of God I was able to get the stand off of my back and stand up. I was able to climb up the creek bank and still went on to hunt for about an hour until the wet, cold clothes got to me.
