The local Co-op has quoted me $38,000 to run my service. The distance is 700 yards. What size coated aluminum wire would I need at that distance? We can say 2000 feet to make it easier. Don't need to get too in the weeds I'm just curious to see what a DIY job could cost me.

Thanks

I know wire is crazy high now but 38K sounds pretty crazy too. I'd probably put up a meter at the road and rent a ditchwitch. Surely 2000' of 2/0 cable will be less than 10K bought in a big spool.

That is exactly what I was thinking.

What is the load on the service going to be? That will dictate the conductor needed.

Sounds high enough to explore other options for sure!!

Power company gonna run high voltage to a transformer closer to your meter, transformer is where the expense is. They're like a year out and very expensive since covid. You would have to have aluminum wire the size of your leg to carry 200 amps 2000 feet

The price they quoted was overhead. My question is inground trenched.

they will set a transformer at the service location , not at the road . did they quote overhead lines coming into the property or going underground . for overhead lines they will contract out to a tree service to clear an easement atleast 20 ft wide from road into the last pole set . thats a big part of their price. ask if they will let you go underground and if you can dig the ditch and lay their recommended pipe size . underground with pipe will require the use of multiple pull boxes set inground and will have to meet their specs also ditch will have to be min 36 inches deep. good luck.

this is with me clearing a 30ft wide easement. The quote is above ground. But, if underground they are above $40 a foot. I was just asking what size wire I need to get that far. But, I may be calling Elon Musk for some solar and battery units. rofl

Youre making me feel a little better. Im gona have to go 200yds or so from the nearest tap. I plan on doing the treework myself so that should save me quite a bit

Yet another reason im thinking about off grid solar/generator combo. $90000 just to get to pay them for power is absolute extorsion

I don't think your post made me feel any better.

What are you running power to? Some places will estimate how much power you will use and the more they think you will use the more money they will give towards building the line.

Is it for a home?
I believe that is way too high. Last I remember under ground was around 8-10$ a foot for my house last year. I am getting close to 1,500 feet in distance and underground.

It be's that way sometimes.
