Growing up we always squirrel hunted. I'm 31 just for a reference. Man I loved it and we always ran into other squirrel hunters. We would keep what we needed and always had people wanting them. Then as a teenager I got into deer hunting and all a squirrel was is a nuisance. I've been fortunate and hunted alot of alabama and have killed to me some really good deer. Fast forward to now, my two oldest boys are into hunting. We've been on deer hunts since they were 3yrs old and I've killed deer with them with me. Some nice bucks too. They will always rather go squirrel hunting.

So my point is... We never run into other squirrel hunters, even on WMA's. Nobody wants them to eat. People think I'm crazy when I go squirrel hunting instead of deer hunting. Most places where people deer hunt they don't want any squirrel hunters around much less hunting their land.

Squirrel hunting has taught me and my sons alot about aiming and waiting patiently for the best shot. It's faster paced and more forgiving than deer hunting. We love to eat them in multiple recipes. But it seems no one does it anymore.

I would love to take part in that.

This is my personal experience and what I see in my kids. Kids love it.

Good to hear. I love squirrel meat and so does my family. Now I will say I don't eat the brains like my grandpa did. I shoot them in the head with a 22lr. I used to get in trouble for this as a kid. Neck shot only back then. This taught me to aim and wait for that shot. Man has that really helped me hunting in general.

Most squirrel hunters these days are hunting them with dogs. As my son got older we gravitated to deer more. I really need to train another dog.

I'm 65 and been going since I was 7. When Dog Deer hunting faded away I started back to Squirrel hunting all the way up to January....then I'll go Deer hunting. I learned patience and how to shoot a rifle squirrel hunting. Didn't own a Deer Rifle until I was 20 because all my Deer Hunting was on drives with a Shotgun/buckshot. I take the squirrels boil/pick them and make Brunswick Stew. I've gone with treeing dogs many times.....but these days just still hunt. Kids want action and shooting and killing when they are young.....that just sitting and waiting on a Deer loses there attention quick!!

We still pile some up every year to eat.

That’s good stuff seeing them kids learning small game. To many folks teach there kids how to pull a trigger over a corn pile now days, they never learn to hunt or read sign, or just to appreciate the woods. My girls ain’t to big on hunting, man I wish they was though. Good luck to y’all in the future.

I loved it as a teenager. I went every weekend as I had no place to deer hunt. I shot them with 22 shorts. I had an old black lady that loved them and I would take them to her. When she died I quit hunting them because I will not eat them.

Small game hunting is where you introduce your children to the outdoors world--along with fishing. It is a heck of a lot more fun than sitting in a box blind for hrs on end. My fondest memories were of actually MOVING through the woods looking for squirrels. AND....it doesn't cost thousands of dollars a year to do. AND....you can wind up with a great family pet to help you find the squirrels. Now, a kid can't have anymore fun than that. Thank goodness for hard wood trees!

We sometimes have a squirrel hunt after deer season. We had one last year and I had a young new hunter get his first squirrel. Made his day. I had to come up with some .410 shells though as I seldom have used my first gun after getting older. Can't wait till my grand kids get old enough.

I bet I killed several truckloads as a kid but quit hunting them years ago. My grandmother always fired them or boiled and made dumplings. What are y’all’s favorite way to cook them?
