For all you blueberry growers out there, I have had a couple of plants in the ground for two years and they haven't grown much at all, they were in a really dry, heavy clay soil location in the beginning and then I moved them to a more sandy loam spot that gets plenty of sunshine. Are they getting to much sun or is it a soil location. Neither of the spots hold a lot of moisture, especially when it gets really dry during the summer months.

As weird as it might sound, mine were the same for a couple of years. I never had a soil sample done so i cant say for certain. On about the third year, i tilled around mine, added a cup or so of both lime and slag around each plant and tilled it it. They grew the next year. And have grown well every year after. The year after i limed and slaged, my pastor told me i needed to prune them. I said they havnt grown enough to prune yet. He said pruning promotes growth, do it anyhow. I cut the tip off every limb and they started growing like crazy. I have to cut atleast 2-3ft of new growth off the top every year now. Thats what i did and mine are really growing well now. I have found blueberries pretty difficult to grow

Lol that is funny, I don't think mine have grown enough to really prune, but I will give it a try.....I definitely like the idea of tilling around them and adding the lime and slag....when I was in Louisiana, I had them on a sight that was pretty fertile, but it was always shaded in, they grew like crazy and I would get plenty off of the 3-4 plants that I had....did you prune early spring or during the fall?

You can just cut off the very tips of each limb. It will help. But as i said, i added the lime and slag a year before that. Im not really sure which had the most effect, maybe both. Mine are over head high now and 6ft wide i guess. I also have some full grown bushes a friend gave me, nine of them. I transplanted them about five years ago, i guess. Two or three of them are doing ok. The rest have gone down hill each year. Im back to letting them put back out from the ground and thats going well. All i can figure is they didnt like the change in soil. I have about 20 or so blueberry bushes on two different properties. Some have done well, some not so much. I bought some in pots and dug some up as sprouts. I cant say whether one or the other has done better. I have 144 ordered that ill set out this coming spring. Theyre tissue culture plants. I have no idea how theyll do.

I have some that were given to me about 15 years ago. They were a single sprig anywhere from 12” tall to maybe 24” tall. They were pulled from the ground, tossed into the back of a pickup truck, hauled around and then given to me a couple of hours later. I planted them in a single row, spaced about 6’-8’ apart. I didn’t expect them to live but they all did. I fertilize them about 3 times per year. Now they are a solid hedge row about 9’ tall. I’m going to take hedge clippers and cut them off at about 4’ high and prune all of the older stems out of them this winter.

They are to the right of the feeder in the pic below.

They need a lot of water, urea, and as mentioned the pH on the lower end. I planted 200 about 10 years ago. They are way more work than I thought. They need a lot of water in the summer. It was a full time job keeping them irrigated I have probably half of them left

I think that's my biggest issue, they are in an area that gets really dry during the summer and the sun beats down on them, I need to roll the dice right now and just move them to a better location that I can at least keep them watered when it gets dry during the summer months....

They look great, mine are only about a foot and a half tall now, after being in the ground for two years so gotta give them some better care.
