Like the title says however I have shot a few roost holes. But just to make yall jealous, I can tell yall this. The amount of Ducks and Geese I saw In Kansas last week was insane. Im assuming all the farmers Duck hunt till around 9am, work on the farm, go back before dark. Thats how it seemed to us. It sounded like a war up there everyday. We were in the Melvern Lake and John Redmond Lake areas. If you true Duck hunters wanted a DIY place to go I would recommend it. I tried counting one afternoon and realized it was fruitless to try to count 1000's of Ducks. Only place Ive seen more was driving through Iowa once.

Ive hunted all over that neosho river bottom. The place I guided for was near Lebo. Ive never shot waterfowl there either but there are a bunch around in early winter.

There have been a lot of discussions the last few years about the Mississippi Flyway shifting West towards the Central Flyway and Kansas becoming the new "Arkansas". That is a simple description and the details are above my pay grade. I'm sure one of our resident experts will come along and fill in the details or call BS on what I have heard. Be interested to hear their thoughts, because I have a few friends that have shifted their hunting from Arkansas to Kansas in the last 2-3 years.

There is an incredible amount of pressure in Arkansas. Ducks respond to pressure by flying off.

When I was a kid I took an old roll film video camera, had to wind it, and filmed some hunts. We talking 50 years ago. One day I laid on my back and filmed a whole roll, 8mm I think, of nothing but ducks and geese flying south. None stop the whole reel. Thousands. Think I still have it somewhere or used to anyway. Would show my films at Christmas many years before hunting shows. Maybe Virgle Ward fishing

Heard more than a few farmers/hunters around Stuttgart that have said the flyway has shifted. We saw a few high-flying groups that had no intention of coming down out of the stratosphere to give us a look-see, opening weekend, but were inundated with Specks...and no Speck decoys. They far outnumbered the Snows, which was odd. We've said the flyway has shifted here (Miss'ippi) for a while now.

Too bad I only put out a dozen speck decoys. Though we did get three groups to decoy. I just need to get my kids to shoot better.

That spec hunting definitely has my interest! It’s addictive. More fun than calling ducks to me. And they eat incredibly good.

I’ve heard they were good table fare. Definitely would go after them more than Canadian geese

The more guns you have, the better (fun) the hunt is. Hard setting up all that”s needed for a good spread for 3 birds each and done with only a couple of guns. The right group comes in early and your done with the guns…break out the camera and hang out in the blinds for a while watching.

Best hunt I’ve had for Specs was fog about 30 feet off the deck, no dekes and a goose call. You could hear them in the fog and when they’d drop down to check things out, it was game on.

Specks only eat grain that’s why they taste so good.

Specks are fun but they still cant beat a big group of honkers coming in. It just doesnt happen much any more. When the canada geese used to migrate down the Mississippi flyway my friends and I would go after school and shoot them. A buddy of mine had an awesome setup with about 1500 decoys and we shot out most days. Now youre lucky to see any near the refuges. Used to be hundreds of thousands. I may go next week and shoot some resident canada geese that hang out on local lakes. We just take 4 or 5 dozen Avian-x full body decoys and use a blind in cut corn fields. But it isnt the same action as it used to be.
Specks do taste much better though.

That’s what I’ve heard too The pickwick resort users to joke tons of ducks back in the 80s. Sky at sunset would darken the last of the season Last time I saw something almost like that was in 2001 or so when everything out west locked up. I keep clinging to seeing that again one day. It’s becoming doubtful. But the specks are even hitting our farm now. I’ve killed a few there in the past years.

Specks do taste much better though. We hunted with some guys in WI and we’d have groups of 50-100 set down amongst us and the decoys. That was awesome. Most I’ve had set down in our spread would be 15-20 at a time in our corner of the state. I do like that double clucking and maple leafing coming in all excited like.
