In areas where a backing isnt available then a compass set or trench set is perfect for those places I especially like a compass set, it’s probably my most used set. I modify it slightly, using 3 holes and leaving the approach open. When I do this I try to put at least one of the holes at the base of a tuft of grass. Sometimes I’ll use a traditional compass set in the center of a 4 way intersection. I also like using a large rock or piece of slag with a flat set. A little lure under the rock and your good That’s pretty smart leaving the door open on a compass set…never occurred to me to do that but then we develop a style that creates tunnel vision and the inability to see better or newer ways to accomplish the same goal I thought of it as giving them an excuse to stop short rather than commiting. Everyone has their style and as long as it works, go for it.
"Cull" is just another four letter word...

I thank everyone for your replies. Because I only get to go to this hunting club a few days at a time then have to pull them, then come back to the real world, maybe thats some of the issue is the traps are not soaking long enough. I do use gloves when setting and different gloves for bait. I wish I had taken some pictures of my sets last time I was down there to give you an idea what they look like but about everything yall are describing regarding how to make your set pretty much Im doing. I do try use some type of backing , be it some clumps of weeds or I'll even put a small branch or small log or limb on the backside of my bait holes to keep them from attempting to access the bait from the back. And I'll do as goatkiller suggest by making my dirt hole a little bigger. I do have the auger I use with a cordless drill.

dont be afraid to let them sit. I caught a cat last year on one that had set for 3 weeks. Caught one earlier this season that had set for 8-10 days.

John, It sounds like you are doing it right. Try this, On three of your sets get your dirt hole at least 12-14 inches deep. Fill the hole about half way up with canned Pedigree dog food. Use the ground up stuff that looks like potted meat, not the gravy stuff. Put a little bait in the hole and some lure near the hole. If you are putting a limb or something as a backing remember that just something small for a coyote is key. Don't build a fort unless you are trying to catch a bobcat. Sometimes using extra bait will get them stopped and zoned in. Post a picture of your set. You should be catching something if you have that much sign. Worst case is that you will catch a possum with all the dog food and the coyote will eat the possum. Ask me how I know that...
