My boy was selected for a youth duck hunt in January. Neither of us have ever duck hunted, but figure this would be a good experience. I have a modern 20 gauge we can shoot steel through. I have a 1970 model A5 with a IC barrel. Both of us can shoot, but best I know you’re not supposed to shoot steal through that old barrel. Would one hunt actually cause damage? Would tungsten be better or worse?

Tungsten would be worse…..and terribly expensive. You want bismuth shot for both guns honestly. Don’t shoot steel out of the old one for sure.

I’ve been able to hunt there a couple of times. It’ll be fun. Be prepared to wade. If I was going to try it through the browning steel is absolutely the only I shoot tungsten would be worse for sure. If you need any info on it feel free to pm me

I certainly might hit you up for more details. Real quick though, what are the blinds like? How many folks per blind?

If your hunt is in January, you have time to order Boss copper plated bismuth.

I’ve never been put in a blind. Both times they dropped us off at pretty much a lake and said the ducks will be in this general area and the rest is up to you. Decoys, calling, retrieval. When I’ve been they allowed 2 adults and 3 kids per hunter drawn. We had a lot of fun but you literally go in cold turkey.

How long ago since you’ve been? It’s under new management as of the past year or so. Might be a little different.

Occasionally has some ring necks but definitely not dependable.

2021. Brae was in charge when I went. I highly recommend it, I have tried to go back every year just can’t seem to get drawn. As far as ducks pwyse. We had every opportunity to kill a 2-3 man limit of mallards and killed a couple gadwalls. I’d love to get to go back. I don’t think it holds a ton but its proximity to the river in addition to being surrounded by catfish ponds doesn’t hurt anything.

The only thing about the guns you mention is the IC bore. Bismuth is like lead and likes being choked down usually.

Pattern to see what your range is and keep shots inside that.

Boss shells are hard to beat and the 3/5 covers the spectrum well.

I’m gonna load my own bismuth this year since I have thousands of hulls and plenty of powder I need to load. Only thing I had to order was the shot. I’m gonna use two different buffers and see what happens pattern wise.
