Homeless Man's Funeral
I was recently asked by a funeral director if I could play at a grave side service for a homeless man. The deceased had no family or friends, so the grave was in a cemetery in the country.
Sadly, as I don't know that part of the country, I got lost. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral director had already left.
There were only the diggers and the crew there, and they were eating lunch. I felt bad and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the gravesite and looked in. The vault lid was already in place.
I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play. The workers stopped eating and began to gather around. I played like I had never played before for this homeless man. As I played "Amazing Grace", the workers began to weep.
They wept, I wept, and we all wept together. When I finished, I packed up my guitar and started walking to my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full.
As I opened the door of my car, I heard one of the workmen say, "I've never seen anything like this and I've been putting in septic tanks for 20 years!"
