They need to be decalcified every year. You can watch a youtube video and do it yourself or have a service company do it.

Had one in our hunting cabin that was flawless & was a "set it & forget it" affair. No trouble out of it at all for probably 7-8 years of infrequent use.

Mine is 7 years old and have had zero issues. It's probably been a couple years since I cleaned it - gotta add that to my list of chit to do. I have a little sump pump that I put in a 5-gallon bucket with vinegar and water and flush it through it for about 20 minutes or so.

EDIT: Mine is a Rinnai unit on natural gas.

It's supposed to be back flushed at least once a year. I did mine twice a year. Every six months. Three gallons of vinegar back flushed through the water heater for 20-30 minutes. Otherwise the core will become damaged.

Nobody ever does the maintenance, but if you're in a hard water area, you'll regret not doing it.

About the same. I can’t even remember when they were installed. They did install a filter before it but it had to be removed some years ago when the filter body developed a pinhole leak. We opted not to replace that.

13 years. Have a Rheem, it's mounted on the outside of the house. I backflush CLR or vinegar every 2 years. But I don't have hard water.

Best thing I ever did was plumb in an outdoor spigot to the hot water heater.

I have a Rinnai tankless propane with the recirculation pump. Mine is one year old today, guess it’s time to do the maintenance on mine!

I didn’t want to jinx myself but I’ve had a Rinnai for 12 years and have never touched it either. It has worked flawlessly the entire time we’ve had it. It’s mounted on the outside of the house and if it dies today, I will replace it with another Rinnai.

I have a 12 year old Rheem. Works perfect. I flush it twice a year and have had zero issues. I use Haymaker solution in a 5 gal bucket with a cheap HF pump to circulate it. Let it run for about 45 minutes then flush well. (I installed shutoff valves and quick connects for flushing when I installed it).

haven't heard that name in a long time. When i first got out of high school (90's). I went to work for a plumbing and elect company. We had a sewer line that we couldn't clear. Was gonna try chemicals, but we were out. I dug through the toolbox and found a jug of Haymaker drain cleaner. Looked like it had been in the toolbox for years. It worked. Most of the guys wouldn't use it. Later on, there was a main sewer line we couldn't clear. Tried a sewer cable. A jetter and even some chemicals. I kept telling my co-worker that Haymaker will get it. Finally he let me pour some down the line. It finally got it. It burnt holes in my pants too. Best drain cleaner I ever used. I'm sure its discontinued now, probably was then, but it worked.
