I'm neither pro or anti union, but I think it is a bad move by the UAW - considering the current economic situation this country is facing.
I somewhat understand their demands for increased salaries considering how poorly our government has managed inflation, but I would consider a short-term contract (2-years, bump in pay to compensate for inflation) to keep the folks working vs.striking.

The union always asks for a lot more than what they will get. The basic rule is to ask for 4 or 5 times more than what you want, and if you get half or a little more than half of that then its considered a win.

Carter Who cares what they want? It’s called a negotiation for a reason. Socialism 101. Everything about a union is socialism in foundation. Change my mind They biotching about the leadership making all the money. What about those union presidents and leaders making all that bank too? As usual the middle gets screwed coming and going. They pricing themselves out the market so they’re really screwing themselves. That automotive bubble is gonna pop sooner than later and they’ll be looking for taxpayer help again.

Folks don’t think about the impact throughout the supply chain. Tens of thousands of workers will be impacted at the companies which supply the assembly plants. Hours will cut, shifts eliminated…. paychecks will be drastically reduced or gone altogether. Whether Tier 1 or Tier 2, or an industrial supply company. Impact will be immediate and huge.

Carter Who cares what they want? It’s called a negotiation for a reason. Difference between a negotiation and extortion. Prez and all the Dems will put tremendous pressure on the execs of all the big 3 because they need those union campaign contributions and unified union votes, with the elections being only 13 months away. How about the negotiation goes like this. We will pay your people commensurate with the skills your people bring to the table. If we can train someone off the street, in just a few days, to do everything you do, then you get paid minimum wage. If this were to happen, then 85% of the UAW jobs would be paying minimum wage. Which is exactly how it should be now that 90% of all plants are almost fully automated with robots doing the welding, piece setting, painting, etc. It doesnt matter one lick how much the company makes in profit, a working man should be paid what the job he does, is actually worth. If someone thinks they are worth more then go do something that commands that kind of money or take the risk and start your own damn business so that you can make the big $$, if you are successful. $90 billion and $86 billion for pension bailouts and using my tax dollars to do it? If the market crashes and my investments and 401K goes to $0, or my personal business and the business that I work for goes under, is the govt going to use your tax dollars to make me and my employees whole? Our investments and 401ks are out pension plan. Frak the unions. If you support this union BS, then dont complain one iota about vehicle prices and inflation because this is exactly what is driving it. I'm not even going to bring up the ripple down effect on all those privately owned small businesses that are tier 1, 2 and 3 suppliers that this little dog and pony, extortion show will effect and potentially put out of business if it goes on for any extended length of time.

I work for an employer that manufactures tires for these automakers. As of this morning we have been immediately impacted by shutting down the tires that are produced for them. Not too good for us. The company has already been on a head reduction mission and sent out letters that will take affect Jan 12 for a lot of the salary workers.
So now this, not sure if it will reach down to the hourly production workers or not. Hopefully we can keep working without a layoff I was at a non union Tier1 supplier yesterday morning, they have 3 parts contracts, one of which is to a Big3 OEM They’re already looking at a layoff plan should the strike drag on as 33% of their work just went to 0

Like I said, here at this plant they were already doing a headcount reduction and some drastic cost cuts on things before the strike talks started swirling. Now I don’t see how we avoid a layoff if this strike drags out.

I hope the dudes at your plant are trying to rapidly get money squirreled back but I know that’s tough with inflation

European values are here, 2-3 hr lunches are next. And we wonder why all these manufacturing jobs go overseas. There is a difference between making a living and asking for the moon. Unions started out with a noble cause, even if they had mob ties. But now with the labor laws, etc. in place they have outlived their purpose in most situations.

I’ve been working in the auto manufacturing field for almost 27 years now. The UAW can suck my left nut. Nothing but a bunch of corrupt worthless and lazy bastards.
