And then how many buttons get killed, because they are mistaken for a doe? To me that is sort of like aborting babies, you don't know what you missed out on.

Even if you let them walk, your neighbor could shoot them. In a club, especially one that really doesn't manage their deer, people shoot any "legal" buck under the club rules, because they reason the next guy will shoot it. I let a nice 2.5 year old 8 walk twice last year, and then another guy in my club shot it. It's frustrating to try to improve things.

I got a pic yesterday of a buck I think I saw last year. He's added some mass this year. I found one of his sheds in a field close to where I have him on camera. But he was a small buck a let walk. I wonder what he will look like next year, assuming he survives?

I would not pay to hunt on a property where every doe that came in a plot was shot. I would also not pay to hunt a place where any legal buck was allowed to be shot. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of. If im gonna pay dues it’s gonna be on some decent land with like minded people. If I can’t afford it I’ll go as a guest somewhere and shoot what they want. But I’m not flushing my hard earned money down the toilet for that. What’s the point? Heck if you like the club life pay a small fee, leave your camper there and be the camp cook or something. Sit around the camp fire or plant plots or something. But why pay to hunt like that?

This is why I said if I ever got to run a club it would be run different. Last year I let a nice 2.5 year old 8pt walk, twice, another guy killed it. I was texting back and forth with one of my other members about it, and said, the issue here is I know if I let this buck walk, someone else will kill it. And that is what happened. It sucked too. And he would have been really nice this year at 3.5. So rather than fuss, I changed the rule on bucks.

The problem now is that it costs alot to lease property. And if you soil test, lime and fertilize properly, that runs the cost up even more. You have to change the culture and get members who understand the direction and game plan and are willing to exercise trigger control.

I have hunted all over this State with many different groups on different tracts of land.... for over 40 years - and I have yet to find a "club" that claimed it was "8 point or better outside the ears" that actually was.

I've never seen it. I've heard it a whole lot. Reality is that most of the time these "clubs" blast 2.5 year old deer like it's going out of style.

The only true trophy hunting I have seen in this State of Alabama is done by groups of 5 or less who lease together and hunt together and have the same mindset.

That's a very small group IMO. I know of only a few groups like this. Most people can't get over paying to hunt somewhere and not shooting "their fair share" of deer along the way. Some gonna turn that into a game where they tell you they eat 15 does in a calendar year and never go to the grocery.... which would mean that they either eat deer meat 5 times a day Or they are shooting 60lbs deer right and left which is also plausible in this State.

No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

All I know is somoene has to sign the lease, unless you own it. Someone has to collect the money and pay the lease holder. Then buy seed and fertilzer, and pick it up. Buy lime, and put all that out. Soil test. Disk, plant. Clear trails. Do maintenance.

That's the hard part. Chasing people down for money and getting them to invest time.
