So I have a question for those that carry a backpack hunting.

What are you carrying that won’t fit in a pocket? I mean some folks look like they are going on an overnight hiking safari with this big Ol’ pack crammed with stuff just for a morning or evening sit. I just want to know why and what’s in that thing?? I’ve hunted my whole life and never thought I needed to have one, but it seems that everyone but me has one strapped to their back and stuffed to the gills.

I’m just curious and forgive the ignorance. Maybe I’m misunderstanding and not being as efficient as I could be. What’s the purpose for Whitetail hunting?

A six pack is to cumbersome to carry along with my rifle.

I carry basically all my clothes in my pack, because I sweat bad walking and climbing. I carry a huge 6L pack and it’ll hold my bulkiest outfit I wear, which Sitka jacket and bibs, along with a few layers of merino wool bases. Add a sammich or 2 and some Christmas tree cakes, couple of oatmeal crème pies and a nutty buddy and I will sit all day

If you want to always win, never play anyone better than you!

It’s not efficiency but being prepared. What if it all goes south and you’re alone with dead cellphone. Day hunt could have you spending the night. Water, first aid kit with CAT, quick clot & chest seal dressing for chest wound , emergency bivy sack, snacks, waterproof matches, lighter, fire starter, extra flashlight, knife, space blanket, rain jacket, field dressing gloves, signal mirror, toilet paper, hand sanitizer or wipes. Extra ammo. Other stuff I’m not remembering but those are basics. I like to be prepared in case the day hunt and cellphone goes bad with no one else on lease and I need to survive. What if I get hurt? Or someone else gets hurt and I have to take care of their injuries.

Did you forget Moon Pies?

I carry a smaller pack but same deal really. I put my Sitka gear in a compression sack and strap it to the pack. Inside I put some extra layers and food and water

I carry a backpack only on public land hunts or new sits on ground I haven’t hunted before. I typically have a bottle of water/snack, rattling antlers, range finder, flashlight with extra batteries, extra bow release, handheld limb snippers, hot hands, toilet paper, and a few other things. When I’m hunting a stand I’ve hunted before there’s not much need for a lot of that stuff, and I can cram a lot in my pockets. On new hunts, which I’ve done a lot of in the last few years, a small backpack is invaluable.

I rough hunt public property and the pack allows me to take enough stuff to stay overnight if needed and pack meat out.

Hunting private land when I only plan to sit for a max of 3-4 hours no I do not bring a back pack. I’m going to Illinois in the fall and plan on taking one. Will carry food, water, I will use it to hold my extra jacket/clothes. I may take some calls, binoculars, toilet paper, extra flashlight, a battery pack to re-charge my phone.

Maybe a few other things. I want to be able to stay in the woods all day if I need to.

I will for sure be adding a first aid kit to my bag.

To answer the OP's questions: water, fire, knife, sustainment, comms...in that order.

I exclusively hunt public land and it's often where I have no cell service. I've spent my fair share of time afield in the Marines and know what I will want if shucks goes sideways. Even if I'm hunting within a half mile of my boat, I will take my pack that has at least 1 DOS, fire starting capability, knife and sharpener, warming layers if required, charger, etc. I've frozen my ass off too many nights, especially in SERE school, to go through that crap now.

As many have mentioned, it’s mostly clothes for me. If I’m Walking in or still hunting I don’t want to sweat so I dress very light, but keep a couple layers of clothes, a hat, gloves, etc. I also always keep a small folding saw, headlamp, small power bank, a sheet of camo material and some cord to make a quick ground blind if needed, water, food, compass, lighter/matches, wind. It’s not a ton and doesn’t weigh much but I would t want to try to carry it all without a pack. Also, if I shoot something in deep I’m likely to want to pack it out rather than drag it.

A backpack for me is where I put the crap I'll need for every hunt. Hunter's orange vest, binos, range finder, gloves, book.

It's more about having all the stuff in one place and not forgetting something than actually truly needing a pack. Just being organized.

Between the pockets in my safety harness, pants pockets and shirt pockets, I carry everything I need. I’ve never used a backpack.
