My understanding of the meaning of “speaking in tongues” from the accounts of the Holy Bible were all quite strictly limited to Jesus and the Apostles speaking any of the multitude of languages and regional dialects thereof to those whom they’d encounter. It’s hard to spread the word in only one language when you lived in a region that had ten or more languages spoken. This is where interpreters would be handy as well. I think I’ve seen two instances of someone “speaking in tongues” in the more modern sense. Both folks struck me as theatrical attention-seekers. I heard jibberish. Not Greek, not Hebrew or even Farsi. Nothing remotely similar to a known language. I do not believe the almighty would choose to convey an indecipherable message if it was the intent to tell us something. I believe he works within us if he has something to tell us or show us personally. I find theatrics a bit insulting, and blasphemous, actually.

The bible talks of 2 baptisms. One with water, one with spirit. You ever hear people talk about the baptism of the Holy Spirit?
I have heard people speak in tongues. I have heard people pray in tongues. If you open your mouth and a sound comes out, God hears it. It comes from you releasing control.
The Holy Spirit is amazing and works in mysterious ways. I will tell you about one. If you know me, you would know I really an introvert. I am also ADD, and my brain is always about 10 steps ahead of my mouth. I went by church one day to talk to my pastor, and as I was leaving, I walked by a woman outside on her cell phone. I couldn't hear what she was saying, but could tell by her tone and appearance she was visibly upset. The next thing I know, I have done a 180 and I am standing right beside her. I start thinking with my brain, this woman is going to think I am a freak. Then I hear it, or rather I became aware of it, that she knew exactly why I was there. When she hung up, before I was aware I had said it, I had asked her if I could pray for her. She told me exactly what I needed, and I put a hand on each side of shoulder, and prayed for her. This IS NOT me. I am not capable of doing things like that. I am just not. I do not like to pray outloud or publically. Because I am ADD and my brain outruns my mouth.
There have been many times I have been involved in a situation, and hear, or rather, I become aware of what I should do. It doesn't flow from logic. It isn't something that fits my circumstance, its like a download.
I have had people pray over me and tell me things they can't know. More than once. How do they know?
There is a thread right now on the Birmingham Subreddit about Church of the Highlands. You should go look at it and see the level of hatred for the Church. You ever been in a disaster area in Alabama? Who is one of the first groups you see? COTH people. It doesn't have to be perfect, only one person ever was. Most of the comments are just vile.

Back in the early to mid 70's my mom was a huge Jimmy Swaggart fan. Loved his music and had umpteen of his albums. I remember them carting us off to Birmingham one day for one of his concerts and sermons. I ended up sitting a few seats over from mom and dad and close to some old ladies I didn't know. About halfway through his sermon, the lady next to me broke out in tongues and it scared me to death! I literally jumped 2 seats over and sat next to mom. That lady was babbling on and on incoherently with eyes rolling back and it was really weird to see as an 8yo kid. Won't ever forget that.

Been going to church all my life - never heard it or hear anybody talk about it. I think it was used more back in the day in the Bible - just like we dont see all the enormous Jesus miracles like back in the day when he was on earth or after thru others
Some churches may be doing it - but i dont see it in baptist - i would be inclined to think lot of its for show now and supposed to hav an interpreter but only God and that person knows for sure
Hunt the wind - leave it better than you found it - love your neighbor as you love your self We need prayer for our country now more than ever

I grew up Pentecostal and still attend an Assembly of God church. I’m 3rd and 4th generation on both sides. I will tell you that speaking in tongues is real. If you have ever experienced an outpouring of the HG and been touched by Him in that manner- you know what I mean. I don’t think Pentecostals do a great job of explaining it sometimes- tongues really isn’t important. We should all be praying for “more” of the Lord in our lives- never be content with where your relationship is with Him, always asking for more….let Him figure out the more part, we should be willing vessels. I think every believer reaches a point in their walk with God where they need more of Him. Whatever they have isn’t working and you almost become desperate for Him to do something. I can remember the night I got filled with the HG and spoke on tongues. The evangelist preached about the parable of the 10 virgins and their candlesticks- title of his sermon was “Why you need the Holy Ghost”. I can’t tell you what he preached about but I knew as soon as he gave an alter call I was going to the alter! I was always one of those guys that prayed Lord please don’t let me run around, jump up and down, scream, make a scene, etc when I got filled- that was pride, plain and simple. As I walked to the alter, I said Lord, I’ll do whatever You want and act however You want- I just want more of You in my life. My pride had been demolished by a hunger for a fresh touch from the Lord. I got filled that night and spoke in tongues. I feel like it is a gift for moments when you don’t have the words to pray or know how to explain the feelings of hurt, doubt, fear, you name it. That is what the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues is for- it’s a way to speak to the Lord about a need. I also know the devil hears our prayers when we pray, and that makes him quake with fear…but he still hears them. I heard it preached once that the devil can’t understand tongues and that is a gift from the Lord as well. I don’t know how to explain it all, but when it happens to you- you are changed! Hallelujah! Going out on a limb for my Aldeer family, y’all always give me good info so I gotta return the favor now 🤣

It’s essentially the holy spirit praying through you. There are two kinds of speaking in tongues: personal tongues that are just between you and God, and tongues that are shared with others. The Bible is clear that if you speak in tongues to others and there isn’t an interpretation, it wasn’t meant to be shared. I've been around several with interpretation following and people just praying, I will say the times that interpretation followed was in the middle of a sermon and total silence in the church until someone translated after, i grew up in a Pentecostal church, I was also put on the spot by some African preacher that called me out of 1200 people and asked what i saw, i was about 14 and i said Lord if youve ever spoke speak now lol

Since God isn’t a respecter of person I wonder why he only chooses a select few to speak in tongues? Are they more religious or better Christians I just don’t understand.
