I think anyone who was not aware of another's affiliation with a church/faith that does this that it would cause you to think it was something else going on and even perhaps seek medical attention for that person.
I have heard of this, but to my knowledge have never witnessed it and even if I knew someone attended a church that this was commonplace I think I would still be uncomfortable in the situation mostly just because it is an unfamiliar thing to me.

I’ve heard it spoken through some of the most godly people I’ve ever know . But I know there are some that are for show , as bad as that is to say . A former pastor of mine was at a revival and one of the ministers came up and said @who is going to speak in tongues to get them started “ . My pastor left . The other side was a German lady came to a church and someone spook in tongues in perfect German . The lady tried to speak to the person that spoke in tongues in German and he couldn’t understand her. Sometimes when there is an interpretation but not for the whole congregation.

Got exposed to the tongues with my then girlfriend, now wife, at a church of god revival. This was a second date for us, since she invited me to her church. I was vaguely aware of the wild services of the church of god, but a revival was on another level. All I can say was it was crazy. Pew jumping, not a word of English. I’m sitting here with my Baptist self thinking what did I get myself into. I guess she was getting me back for our first date when I took her to see the 40 year old virgin. The Bible seems pretty clear that if someone is speaking in tongues then an interpreter needs to be there to interpret what the Holy Spirit is saying. If that isn’t happening then it’s not “real”.

I believe that many of the people that speak in tongues - believe in what they are doing.
I however am skeptical of the act. I am especially skeptical when someone can “choose the time and place” to do it. For example: A lady had asked for prayers in our group for her daughter’s pregnancy, she (daughter) had several miscarriages previously. Another lady said,”I’ll pray in tongues for her and your prayer will be answered.” So she did so in front of all of us,.
When we left church, my wife made a comment about how it freaked her out and that she should NEVER make a promise that ONLY God can deliver. I told my wife that it sounded like the lady can speak Hebrew, because that WAS EXACTLY (or at least many of the words) the language she was speaking. Perhaps she really believed what she was saying was God’s language or perhaps she was full of herself. It’s not up to me to see someone’s heart or their beliefs - but, unfortunately the young lady had issues in the pregnancy and lost the baby.
"The struggle you're in today, is developing the strength you need for tomorrow."
Why speak in tongue when we can't understand it? Wouldn't it be English, Hebrew, Arabic or whatever language besides tongue? That makes me think it's more of an evil spirit talking. I dont mean to offend anyone. I could be wrong so correct me if I am.
I'm not a Tongue speaker in my Baptist Church and no one else there is either, of course. I did have Church of God friends that I discussed this with, and to answer your question, no human is supposed to understand it. It is not a human language. Only God is supposed to understand it as it is the Holy Ghost taking over a person and they are speaking directly to God this way. I won't judge them for this as it is possible for this to occur IMO, but I don't believe it puts them any closer to God than I am when I pray in English.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

There absolutely is Bible that backs it up. We just went over it in Bible study a week or so ago. That being said, i have never experienced such myself but i have witnessed it in church services. Like someone above said, it sounded like jibberish to me, but i have no idea what was going on between that person and the Lord right then. The Bible also said if one spoke in tongues, they should have an interpreter. I personally have got pretty close to the Lord at times but i never spoke in tongues. One thing im ignorant about. But there is Bible to it.

Tongues is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and is listed in the order of operation in the church 1 Cor 12:28 My grandfather was a Baptist preacher for 60 years and I listened to a conversation the he and my uncle had on this subject My uncle asked him if he believed in tongues and he answered yes because it spoken about many times in scripture. Then my uncle asked why we didnt practice it and he replied we are Baptists and its not allowed under our covenant with the organization
When I need expert advice I tend to talk to myself The older I get the better I used to be

Regardless of your beliefs either way, there are some great farqs of Robert Tilton on Youtube speaking in tongues as he prays over a white cloth. It won't help your spirituality but it's light-hearted humor for the soul! God probably gets a good laugh out of it!

That's a Nope for Dave. And at the first Buzzzz of a rattler I may not bruise his head but I'll unass a church of them snake handlers quickly. God through John Moses Browning granted us dominion over dumb SOBs handling pit vipers and I think JMB was Mormon.
Isaiah 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.

THE experience i had with a person "talking in tongues" sounded about as clear as the Tasmanian devil did on the cartoons. To say i was caught off guard is an understatement.
Georgia Football..Acts like Bama but has a trophy case like South Carolina.

Good example of why it was always hard for me to follow the Baptist doctrine.

I grew up in an Assembly of God Church and have been a Baptist for over 20 and never heard anyone speak in tongues. Do I believe someone can, yes, if Holy Spirit commands it. I believe it is a rare, rare event.

Before my father passed away years ago I was a kid an we went to a holiness church . There was a older lady there an every time she stood up to testify she would have the spirit come over her an she would dance around with her eyes closed speaking some kind of gibberish to me . I was bout 8 an it freaked me out at first . She would dance around for 30 minutes doing this an then just pass out . Church would go on with her laying in floor . Bit later she be up an back on bench . Mom told me she was speaking in tongues . They never handled snakes but they did couple of feet washings between the men while eating crackers I think . Never understood that either . They was all good people an mostly family to me .
