OK...

First off, I don't want to turn this into a "This is my favorite bourbon and you should try it thread" (Even though that's what it is. grin)

I stopped by the liquor store after I got back from my motorcycle trip and wanted some bourbon for the cabin this week. They had this Basil Hayden Dark Rye for $3 off at the State Store in Fort Payne, and I'm a sucker for a sale on booze and I love rye whiskey, so I bought it.

Well... Let me tell you, this is THE BEST bourbon I have EVER TASTED, and there's not even a close second place. And I have tasted and still have a $10k bottle of bourbon in my collection.

Have you ever had a really good Old Fashioned? Well... This tastes like a very subtle Old Fashioned straight out of the bottle without an flavorings or anything. It is absolutely delicious. It is so good, I will give you a guarantee that if you buy a bottle, and you don't love it I will buy the rest of the bottle from you.

How's that?

I'm ready to dip into my savings and buy a case of it or a whole barrel. That's how good it is.

Well hell… I just picked up a bottle of the toasted but haven’t opened it yet. I had the dark rye in my hand too but decided against it. And I love an old fashioned.

Don't care for rye bourbon. I like Basil Hayden bourbon though.

I just poured the my last 4oz of Bulleit Rye for a nice Old Fashioned. I’ll head the Centre tomorrow for a bottle of the Basil Hayden.
I prefer a Rye Old Fashioned over bourbon. I’ve had Basil Hayden bourbon and it was pretty good so I’m looking forward to trying the rye.
Thanks for the heads up.

Looks like you done slam knocked the shoulders off that bottle! It’s one of my favorites and I’m not really a bourbon guy.

I’m pretty sure (but I may be wrong as I have been before) that is not bourbon. It’s rye whiskey. Rye whiskey is close to bourbon. Both are aged in new charred oak barrels. The difference being rye mash is at least 51% rye and bourbon mash is at least 51% corn. I think rye whiskey is a little bolder and spiced differently. Bourbon is a little sweeter.

So that is why it is the best bourbon you have ever tasted lol. It’s not bourbon at all. You didn’t even know you were a rye whiskey man did you? Basil Hayden is good bourbon and good rye I guess lol. I think they even put a little wine in their dark rye blend. It’s a little fruitier from what I’ve heard.

I thought this whiskey sounded familiar and went on walkabout to find the review I posted of it. Maybe I got a bad bottle because my opinion wasn’t very positive. LOL. BUT…that’s what makes us great, different strokes for different folks.

Yeah... Didn't mean to call it Bourbon. One of my Kentucky riding buddies has already called me out on it. Thanks for chiming in.

You are right. Different strokes for different folks.

I personally love Port wine. One of my buddies and I drink it all the time after dinner.

Well... I like John Emerald Alabama whiskey too, and there's a lot of people that don't like it either, because it tastes too smoky.

Do you like Chattanooga Whiskey? You should like that one... Well... They have a lot of different varieties now.

I was going to say it is a blend of rye and port wine but I think you already know that. I tried it after multiple coworkers raved about it. I really wanted to like it but I just don't like rye and this one was no different.

I love Rye and I’ve had one bottle of this. It doesn’t taste like typical rye to me (rittenhouse, sazarack), it’s almost like it’s blended with something or has a real heavy herbal flavor imo. It’s amazing how happy it makes you when you find something you really like to drink. Lol
The bottle I bought was only around 60.00 a year or so ago.

That's right. It's blended with Canadian Rye and Port wine.
