It's good to see that at least one state isn't willing to go along with the latest fad - the MS version of the CAB voted down a proposal to change the turkey opener from 3/15 to the Saturday after 3/20. I don't know anything about the politics involved, but their 5 member commission took the stand that our folks refused. Good for them.

They did vote to kill the fall season and stop the hen killing. I've been saying saying for years that every state should do that. It always seemed like common sense to me, and what kind of hunter could take any joy from killing a hen?

"Butler said studies in other states have shown that fall seasons that allow hens to be harvested negatively impact the population. He said a Mississippi State University study in Mississippi indicated the same.

"Our study showed that very small decreases in hen survival have big impacts on the turkey population," Butler said. "The research that MSU did for us showed that an increase as small as 2% in hen survival could stabilize or increase the population."

Good for them. Looks like Mississippi isn’t last in everything now.

There has been a hen or two I’ve “wanted” to kill over the years.

Reads as though MS has some people with a bit of common sense on the cab...must not be a politically appointed position over there

When AL changed it, if I recall the verbiage mentioned changing it to the "3rd Sat in March".....does that mean we'll open on 3/16 next year? or will they change it again to keep it a later opening?

That was the first change and then they changed it to March 25th for now until they change it again

How many of you would be all right with the limited draw for out of state hunters ... in every state you hunt?
It was a bummer not getting drawn for my son's last year in school in Mississippi.

Isn’t that only for the first week of the season on public land only?

1st ten days of the season and yes on public land. Also lines up nicely with Spring Break when had time to hunt. Several other WMA's are draw-only for residents and non-residents.

Gotcha…I guess spring break makes a difference for a college student trying to maximize available time. Most of the states I hunt besides Florida and Alabama are 3-5 weeks into their seasons because I usually don’t go till May.

And they proposed a $9.50/yr turkey stamp to cover the cost of tags. I'm sure that one is coming too.

I can’t imagine shooting a hen on purpose. Sickest I ever got was hitting a sweet gum with my wad and hit a couple of hens several feet to each side of the gobbler. Waiting on 3/25 cost us a couple of turkeys this year I’m certain.

I can't imagine that either, Globe, but I can remember folks proudly posting pics of dead hens on this forum.

Globe I bet that happens a lot more than folks want to admit. I’ve seen it happen twice while trying to get a newby his first gobbler. Never liked it and finally quit taking folks.

I agree preacher, never understood the hen season. Knew a guy who was quiet a character. He was gonna shoot a hen with his bow. One of the first years of the TN season with a bow. Ed drew back to nail her and the only thing that saved her, 3 poults were following behind. I’m talking couldn’t fly yet size poults he said. He never tried again. That was 15 or so years ago when that area of TN was absolutely loaded with turkeys. Unreal numbers of birds. Saw a vid of neighbors property where there was 85 longbeards in one field. David said almost that many on another field on his place at the same time.
