My dad got drawn for a hunt at Little River SOA this weekend and we slap put a whooping on em. Friday morning I spotted three strutters out in a cutover at probably 8:00. Using the terrain to our advantage we made our way over to within 100yds of them and about five mins of soft calling later dad put the lead bird in the dirt. This was his fourth turkey and all four have been with me.

Then this morning at daylight we went back to where we saw the strutters yesterday hoping to get one gobbling on the roost. Around 20mins after daylight I told dad we should move to a high point that stuck out in the clear cut where we could see more of the area. So we made our way up there and sat down against some litte scrubby trees that were out in the wide open. Maybe 30mins later I was glassing an area about 200yds across a big deep/steep bottom from us and out pops a longbeard and a handful of hens/jakes. We watched him for a while and I was putting a plan together to try and slip down into the bottom so that I could ease up the other side on him. Before I took off crawling though I decided to check his temperature with my aluminum pot. He looked around for the call a bit and then went back to eating but was slowly making his way to the edge of the bottom. Next thing I know, this joker pitches off the bluff he’s on top of and sails all the way across to our side landing maybe 60yds over the hill from us. I gave him a few soft clucks and purrs and then he pops up at 15 steps where he was promptly greeted by a load of 9s. I’ve seen turkeys get hung up on a 5’ wide creek and to watch one fly across a 150+yd wide canyon that was probably 120’ deep was absolutely nuts. Needless to say everyone in the whole county could probably hear me hollering after the shot.

For reference, this bird pitched off of the hill at the red X and I shot him when he walked by the dirt pile at the yellow circle. Never in my life would I have expected him to do that after I yelped to him
