Funny how sound can and cant travel. When the leaves are fully out and your canopies are close on flat land in marengo county - not very far 😀

You are still hearing it a mile . I guess you could look at it as 25 square individual acres end to end . I'd be inclined to say I heard him across a section.

I heard one Tuesday and took off after it and finally realized he was just off the property. When I got closer I knew where he was roosted so when I got back to the house I checked it on OnX and it was 1.1 mile.

I'll give yall little tip you might not have thought of . You can hear one fly up from a long ways too .
I've sat on a high spot late in the day and just listened , never called . You hear just one fly up , be there ready to hunt next day .

I never tried ear muffs that made everything louder but I bet they would be a big help

I go by how much rattle I can hear in his gobble if that makes sense. If he’s far I just hear the end of his gobble, could almost get it confused with a woodpecker. If he’s close I hear all the noise leading up to him letting loose. I’m about deaf in my left ear though. I have a few nephews learning the listening part

If you hear a mile in all directions though. Your ears can cover a much larger distance. 5280/2=2640=R. A=Pi*R squared. Calc gives your roughly 22 million SF which equals about 500 acres. So in my mind in the right conditions I can listen to 500 acres at a time

If you can hear him a mile off that is a circle with a 2 mile diameter or over 2,000 acres

I feel I can normally hear one at .75 miles in any direction. That would be a little over 1,100 acres

I heard two Saturday morning and drop pins of where they were. One was .9 miles away, the other was 1.1 miles. That’s the norm here in these mountains. They were both across the valley from me and they both sounded remotely close. A newbie would’ve walked to the bottom searching for them 😀

Checked the one we heard Saturday am on OnX. 0.65 miles and could hear him plain as day. Of course he was on top of a hill overlooking the pasture between us and him so not much to block the sound. I'm used to it on that property but my buddy who hasn't hunted there before said "Dang, that bird sounded like he was 300yds away."

The longest stretch of my property is probably 2.5 miles apart. I feel I could stand in the dead center and hear a bird gobble anywhere on the property. We have 3 miles of bluff line, On the right clear and cold morning, I might even be able to heard a bird gobble all the way from 2dogs place 😁
