Always been amazed on what those little guys can do. Is there a good forum i can reference to learn do's and don'ts for setting up a few gourds? If you're on Facebook, the Purple Martin Fanatics is a group that me and a friend of mine from MO started. You'll get good info there. If you aren't on FB, the Purple Martin Conservation Association has a forum where you can read, and ask questions.

I am now curious to know if he takes the same route each year or can change it up as needed??
He may have flown with a group the first time going and returning and then uses same route?? Me too. They don't really travel in flocks, or groups. They do gather in the late summer in huge pre-migratory roosts, some numbering up to 250,000 birds. I've always though that they stayed in the roosts for weeks, but they don't. They only stay there a day or two, then head south. The roosts can last up to 6-8 weeks and don't vary in size much during that time, but birds are leaving heading south every day, and more birds are replacing them every day. The roosts show up on radar early in the mornings, starting in early June in the deep south, then in our area late June into July.

this is the coolest thing i've seen in a while on here
There is 2 different high fence. 1 small and one big! Mine was free range in the big pen and was not a breeder buck. Why does it have to be twisted around??

I put up new gourds last week. Had plenty in past but they got old and rotten . I got some started in greenhouse for next year if they do good. Hope I’m Not too late this year . Don t see how a small bird like that can fly thousands of miles a find exact spot next year . God works in mysterious ways that we humans will never understand.

Fur - I'm always amazed at your knowledge and dedication to this activity. I absolutely enjoy your posts on the subject and find it fascinating your involvement with the studies. I had my first flock of chickens at 10 years old. I peddled eggs to all the old ladies in the community. We showed steers when I was in school and every afternoon when I’d feed and pet my steers, Barn Swallows would be over my head, building nests, or feeding nestlings. One of my dads good friends had Martins on a Powerline. I’d go sit under the gourds and watch the parents bring in insects to feed them. I’ve always enjoyed any Swallow species. I built 8 Bluebird boxes when I was a senior in HS. I built them for guys in freshman AG that couldn’t build one themselves. It was their class project. I guaranteed them and A and got to keep the boxes. Then I got a college degree from AU in poultry science. A bird degree, but a more specialized one. I have studied them nearly all my life. It’s just a part of who I am.

If you have your gourds in a good, open area and they are large 10-12” gourds, you stand a great chance of attracting some this season. Be watching for a blue band on their left leg. I had 250 nestlings banded last year and they’ll be returning in a week or two. They will spread out and go to new colonies. At best I might get 6-10 of them here
