I would be concerned about what happens after they put the fire out. What is the impact of that to the groundwater and surrounding properties?

It was supposed to be wood waste only. The problem was that there was other things in it. ADEM doesn't regulate natural vegetation land fills. They only go if someone calls and states that there's something in there that shouldn't be. They had at that place and the owner didn't fix it. That's the problem here. Just like the guy you used to work for having demolition debris. That's a big no no unless he was licensed for it, which would then require regular inspection. Natural vegetation dumps are only allowed to have vegetation or non painted, non treated wood. Nothing else.

The problem with a big tree debris dump having some random trash mingled in with it, it would be nearly impossible to remove the random trash, unless you have access to a helicopter. You cant just drive in there and get it. Cant tote it out either. At that point its just there and you pay the fine i guess.

They have moved out of their 4 year old 500k dollar house because of the air quality and currently live in a rented garden home with a few pieces of rented furniture. Driving to family’s house to do laundry. It’s not just cigarette smoke that causes long term health issues and they are other things buried out there than wood debris I know for a fact. The owner has not addressed issues that we’re supposed to be taken care of years ago.

I hope this provides some perspective. If the price goes up because of a disaster resulting from a mismanaged stump dump, so be it. You really needed to see this fire in person to appreciate how big of a nightmare it really is.

I know of this thing shuts down it will be an inconvenience for folks in the tree business, but see above for a real inconvenience.

Have they called ADEM?

Yes. I assure you there is no stone being left unturned.

Civil suit against the landfill owner?

I am sure it would help some of the older folks out who are on fixed incomes who cannot go out and cut their own any more and it would give you a place to at least offload some of what you need to dispose of. As for what wouldn't make good firewood, do you have room on your farm to have a dedicated burn pile for it?

i sell firewood around montgomery and every tree service i ask about getting trees from dropped at my house looks at me like im crazy. i dont get it, they get rid of junk trees for free and i get trees to process into firewood.
