For those that Hunt Cahaba WMA and enter from the East via 260, be advised the mines are trying to block access. There is a new gate that is open for now, and new signs warning and threatening prosecution. I thought maybe it was put up by DNCR to keep ATV and joy riders out, but someone with DNCR gave me the low down. Apparently, the county is backing the mine saying they can.

Is this from the Hwy 17 side, or Hwy 22? I don't know anything about it, but my guess is they are having trouble with joy riding.

Hwy 17. I confirmed with DNCR this applies to everyone including hunters.

It’s illegal to block acces to a WMA it’s public access land I’d call a Sherrif

I heard the County was backing them. Apparently it is legally a private road at that. They also erected a new sign saying county maintenance ends at the gate.

I'd give up on that spot. You do not want to get in a feud with a mining company. They will win.

Can you access from 22 or 10, or are they cutting off a section completely?

There is some access through a neighborhood on the south but it is weird and requires a 4WD. I was told it is a big mess between the state and mining Co. Was also told DNCR working on another access point if they can't work it out. Cuts off 1/3 of the WMA

I'm not familiar with the local area, but I bet the mining company has the county commissioner in their pocket. Do you want to be an activist, or do you want to kill deer?

If you want to kill deer, give up on this spot and move to the next. There's a million different reasons why it happens, but spots being ruined is part of public land hunting.

If you want to be activist, then through a hissy fit about it. Nothing will happen, because the mining company has deeper pockets than public land hunters do. Maybe you can get a social media mob on your side and then get something done, but you're years into the fight by then, and probably haven't killed many deer in that time.

Option C is send Whild Bill. He may troll the mining company into opening the road. Do not underestimate him.

I went down 260 the other day and couldn’t tell if it was open to the public or not, so I got the heck out of there. Thought it would have been a nice short cut to the other side, but oh well.

I wish someone would post the pictures I have. There is little room for doubt.

Mining company appears to be claiming ownership of the road. Theres been some deal struck between Mining company and County for MC to take over road maintenance. No MC feels they own the road and can do as they please. Should be public record on who owns the road.

Yep those signs weren’t there when I was there (or either I didn’t make it to them). I turned around at the fork in the road past the fenced in area.

Gate went up a couple weeks ago. Signs went up in the last week.
