Once CWD does what its going to do……..why not do some continued restocking efforts with doe releases to improve Alabama’s deer herd. People want to kill big bucks and we’re already a long ways off from any purist form of management anyways.

CNC, what is restocking into a CWD infected area going to accomplish? What’s the objective?

Alot of research into CWD resistant breeding going on in the high fence world it may be one of the ways we fight it in the future but who knows.

You beat me to the punch.........this was the reply I had typed out for Matt

From a CWD perspective I figure the long term solution is gonna be for it to run its course and nature will sort out the winners and losers…..Its gonna continue its spread and do what its gonna do….Releasing high fence does could help to introduce a resistance to it……I figure they would be the most likely to be ahead of the curve and possess such deer …..It would an effort to counter the bottle neck that may naturally occur. Once its finished its spread across the state then it is what it is…….there’s no longer a threat of releasing deer that might have it……you’re throwing nature a bone in a way…..more genetic options or outliers to pick and choose from. At the end of the day its kinda naïve to think these places don’t already have escapees occurring or deer interacting nose to nose around the fence lines.

Fully aware of this CNC. I wouldn’t bank on selectively bred deer that show resistance as the savior. There’s always consequences to genetically improved wildlife. Is it an option? Maybe.

While we're releasing wildlife, I'd like to see elk be reintroduced. They had a botched attempt decades ago, and haven't tried since. That was before ADCNR was rolling in corn money though.

Already been looked at. It was determined it would not be a good idea.

It’s my understanding that there are naturally resistant deer in the wild population already.

Hasn't CWD been around for Decades in the West and NorthWest and the Deer still are not Immune to it? Elk Restocking might work in the NorthEast part of the state where it is more Rugged and possibly less farming. I'd imagine an Elk could damage a field of sprouting Cotton,Corn,Soybeans.....and for sure after they make.

Did farmers and insurance companies influence that decision? Not trying to sling mud, just curious and have my suspicions.

I’m curious why elk would be a bad idea. I definitely have zero knowledge on this subject, strictly curiosity.
