I’ll be the first to own up to that. I’ve taken a Texas heart shot before. Deer died but jeez it was awful. The shot was true and right where it was supposed to be. Like I mentioned above I’ve taken a neck shot before and the deer dropped immediately. Both times I took shots outside the vitals I justified it with the excuse “it was the only shot I had” when in reality I probably could have waited 15-30 seconds and not wasted all that meat.

Ive seen very little meat wasted by neck shooters. Shoulder shots tear up a bunch. Any given year I skin 12-25 deer (depending how busy I am). But that has something to do with none of the neck shooters I know use rapid expansion or ballistic tipped ammo. If you want to save meat throw those in the trash.

Never tried a neck shot, never will. I’ll sacrifice a shoulder for a higher percentage shot.

IIRC, I've only shot two deer in the neck in my life. Never really have seen the need for it on a broadside shot with that big vital zone wanting my bullet.

Damn sure not going to shoot a deer in ass even if that's the only shot available. I'll wait for a better shot or pass.

The last 4-5 I’ve shot have been neck shots drt couple have been not by choice due to circumstances but I typically take the shoulder shot.

I have alot of neck shot failure stories, and alot of neck shot recovery stories. Enough of them that I personally don't like neck shots but I wouldn't pass up taking a trophy on a neck shot as long as I felt good about the shot. Kinda of confusing I know.

The last one I remember taking was on a buck tending a doe in a thinned pine stand. I could see him every now and then, for seconds at a time. He wouldn’t leave her side but wasn’t pushing her. I ranged them at 140 yards and settled in on the center of his neck because that’s all I had. Thankfully I hit true but don’t make a habit of it. That was in 2008. I don’t recall taking another neck shot since. A 1” high or low impact is the difference in DRT or temporarily concussed and running into the next county 10 minutes later. I just don’t see the point in taking high risks shots when there’s a 12-16” circle of lung, heart and liver to shoot.

Most of you can't shoot well enough to be trying "Neck" shots beyond 25 yards. I think that's the most realistic answer.

We've got widespread issues of hitting "a deer" anywhere period at 25 IMO. With a freaking rifle.

💯 Finally….something we can agree on🥳

You're only as good as your worst shot-
