Something I’ve started doing this year (with varying success, so the verdict is still out) is ground hunting under a poncho when it’s raining. The spots I’ve been hunting are harder to reach public land, some WMA, some TVA by boat and a couple small tracts of private land.

I’m not going to lug a ground blind all the way to these places, so I’ve been setting up my military camo poncho up between three trees, either in the ledges on the mountain side or in some kind of cover like a tree top. I’ve also been using a piece of camo net as a little extra cover. You can stay pretty well concealed and dry when it’s raining. So far I’ve done this three times this year in a constant rain and haven’t gotten wet yet. It all wads up in a sack about the size of a football and weighs about a pound.

Here’s what it looks like. https://youtu.be/TAs7wAKPvOA

Hey brother, long time since we talked. I love seeing your posts of your boys' escapades haha. We need to reconnect ...

Anyway, I love hunting in the rain. I find it incredibly peaceful and I like the freedom of being able to move from spot to spot without making a lot of noise.

I'm not hunting the same way you do but I've found a method that works for me. I wear rain gear and carry a small seat with a strap that fastens to a tree trunk. When I find a spot I want to cover I setup that seat and sit up against the tree. I've did this several times last season and managed to spot four bucks and a ton of does. One doe got within 10 yards of me before she smelled me. Unfortunately, none of the bucks met the 115" requirement for our club.

I don't want to pass quietly into the night. I want to slide in sideways kickin and screamin
Life really is awesome ... Soak it up while you can ...

When I was hard core, I killed a LOT of deer stalking in the rain into the wind. Good rain gear and you have to clean your firearms completely when you get in. Animals in general cannot smell as good when it’s raining. Most of my closest encounters were during the rain.

Yeah I’ve heard that all my life. I think the falling rain drops capture the scent molecules as it falls. Just a theory.

Yeah man. I’ve looked at the tree seats. I may still get one. Right now I’m using a backpacking chair that folds down to about he size of a loaf of bread. It weighs 2 lbs.

I've killed several in the rain I usually don't do if it's pouring but I had a young 8 feeding yesterday on cam when it came a monsoon.
