I am wanting to get a slug gun and bypass the muzzleloader route. For those of you that use them, what do I need to look at for a 125-yard maximum shot? I don't care if it is an automatic or a bolt action, I just want something that is accurate and will go bang when we pull the trigger. I have seen where the 20 gauge ones are the ones to have and perform best. Let me know your thoughts if you have hunted with one. This will be used out of state.

I am also in the market for one if it fits the above criteria.

No experience with slug guns, but if looking at a straight wall, the
450 Bushmaster in AR is pretty nice and fairly inexpensive. PSA lower and BCA upper and was surprised at how accurate it was out to 200 yards.

At that range an 870 with a rifled barrel would be the way I would go. Honestly, 125 yards is pretty doable with a smooth bore and a bead.

Ive seen several of the 870s around lately. Usually they arent very expensive. I had a friends dad trying to sell me one two weeks ago. I just have no need for it. If I go to a non-rifle state I take my muzzleloader.

if you get a rifled barrel be prepared to pay big bucks in ammo. at $4 a shot it's kind of expensive to sight in.

I haven't compared any, but I like my Savage 220 bolt action. I use the 3" Remington accutips.

I don’t have a slug gun(couldn’t justify the expense) but I’ve gone round and round with my smooth bore 12s and slugs. The lease I hunted for many years was bought by the state and is now a WMA but they don’t allow center fire rifle. ML or shotty with slugs only for gun hunting. I don’t enjoy expending a ML load at the end of a hunt if I don’t make a kill. I had issues with my best slug shooter being way high and left. I bought a bolt on elevation/windage adjustable set and dialed it in last week. I wouldn’t trust these rifled slugs to much beyond 80yrd but they were grouping well at 50Y. I can’t shoot much further than that on most parts of this public land now.

H & R 20ga . But they pull a premium if you can find one. No kick and will out shoot about every other gun out there.

I always thought an A-bolt shotgun would be fun to have.

Where is the best place to find one? I have never owned a Savage in my life and thought Black Friday might be a good day to shop for one.

Thanks.
