Son was in Illinois this morning and had the buck of a lifetime at 60 yards. Winchester primers snapped three times on him. Talk about being sick. Not the first one went off. Nothing I can do to help except warn you folks. This isn't a novice hunter either-he could kill a deer in any Walmart parking lot in America.

Best hunter I have ever met. I feel his pain tonight.

It had a Hornady interlock snap twice on me a few days ago. It happens.

Winchester primers is what I use. Just finished off my first batch that I’ve had for several years. Luckily, I’ve had zero issues with mine.

Not trying to be a dick, but did he take the rifle to the range before season with that batch of primers? I used to use Musket caps on my Remington 700ML before converting to .209s. Well, one year I bought a new tin of musket caps and when I was sighting in they wouldn't fire. The whole damn tin was bad. I'm not sure if they got spoiled in transit or what, but they WOULD NOT ignite a load.

Can't leave anything up to chance with muzzleloaders. I hate that your son had one walk on him--that hurts.

He shot the rifle on Wednesday and the first shot was a hangfire. We both reasoned the breech plug was clogged and it didn't get a good spark to the BH 209. Followed this with several more shots and no issues. I came in after work and shot the gun myself to make sure it was sighted in. No issues at all. I cleaned the gun on Wednesday night inside and out and had it ready to go for him on Thursday morning. The gun was ready.

We keep all the primers, breech plug, manual, etc in a plastic bag. There are 3 packs of primers in the bag and all have been used out of. We both are guessing that one of the packs is bad and the one I shot was good. He had to travel over 30 miles to find primers in some sporting goods store. He got back and ran 3 more primers through it and it never went off with the Winchester primers. He put a new primer on and it fired like it was supposed to. He shot several more of the new primers through it to make sure there were no issues and went back to his stand.

He passed on 2 eight points that I would have shot yesterday evening. The cellular camera showed that the deer he didn't get to shoot walked by his camera at the other stand he was not in at 5:00. I am ready for another update tomorrow from him. Things happen.

Also, I forgot to mention that BH209 really likes magnum primers that fit snugly. I shoot CCI 209M's and have never had a problem with ignition. You also need a good seal around the bullet whether that be a sabot or patch.

That’s rough.

I’ve been using Winchester 209’s with my BH209, I’ve never had an issue. I don’t take special care of the primers either.
Guess it’s just bad luck.

I don't believe I ever had a hiccup using BH209 and Fed209As for either my encore of accura. Then again out of habit, I always check to make sure to see daylight through the breechplug after every shot. Out of experience, will not swap brands of primer w/o going to the range first. Have seen different results w/ different primer types at least for 777. Have never deviated from the 209As for BH209 as I believe that is the recommended primer.

I've been using a 50+ year old brick of Herter's that my grandfather bought in the 60's, they've all gone bang so far... If I could find some new ones I'd buy them, but reading this makes me wonder if I shouldn't just stick to what I know works.

Didn't see him the rest of the MZ hunt. I went back with him on Firiday to bowhunt and we both saw him. He was back and he had him at 35 with his bow but just didnt have a shot. Headed back on Wednesday for the next MZ hunt. I will keep you posted.

I saw the deer with him on Friday. A 150" deer in the wild is something most folks will never see. It was an amazing experience to see such an amazing animal. I would love to see that rack on the fireplace.

My dad had a batch of Winchester 209 primers that were not very good. He also had a misfire on a nice buck. After that we went to the range and snapped a few primers off and they were inconsistent in power. Most were good but a couple were very weak. I then tried them in my muzzleloader and I couldn't even get the action closed with them in there. Something was off with their size.

I have been shooting the Remington Kleanbore primers and have not had any issues. My dad also switched over and has not had any issues since.
