Hunted yesterday afternoon in a narrow area of hardwoods between river and strip mine pond. The area has many oaks that haven’t dropped many acorns this year but serves as a funnel at least. At 4 three doe trotted in and surprised me by attempting to travel behind me between me and river and also downwind. I wasn’t expecting them to take this route and as such hadn’t cut shoot lanes. To get shot before they winded me I had to squat slightly and hold bow at angle Rambo style😂. My shot looked good as it passed through selected doe but I was worried that it may have been a touch back. I gave her 45 minutes or so and got down to inspect arrow. It didn’t have much blood and neither did immediate area/trail. I eventually found decent blood and tracked it over a berm only to find the doe bedded on other side. I ducked down and drew my ol PSE from 1993. As I rose above berm she bolted. I gave chase trying to head her off assuming she’d cross a logging rd. I didn’t think I’d get a shot but wanted to see which path she’d take. Nothing. I eased up to where I last heard it and came up short. Taking a few more steps, I glanced over at the pond and there she was already bedded. I made a follow up shot but it was high and hit backbone but not spine. She took off again skirting waters edge over to other side. Again I gave chase running up the hill in order to get ahead of her and cut her off. As I ran back down towards water, she heard me coming and jumped on pond to swim back across. So now I’m running back down hill and over to other side. As I approached where she was looking to come ashore, I waited undetected. The arrow from my follow up shot was still in her and I could see that she was running out of steam. When she was about six from shore her nose went under and she stalked. Fearing she’d sink, I slid down steep bank and eased in to get her. I had to be careful as the water gets deep quickly from shore. One boot swamped as I reached out and took hold of the arrow which now served as a harpoon. Once ashore I used remaining adrenaline to haul her up bank. Wow! Success! Turns out my first shot was back hitting one lung liver and exiting stomach. Crazy ending.

That was crazy

Congrats on an experience u prob never forget

When I was much younger - I shot a screwed up rack buck many years ago and was still new to tracking

I ran after the deer (there were a lot of bettr decisions I could hav made) anyway - the deer had bedded and I scared it off it’s bed. It may hav died right there if I hav left it alone. A deer has a strong Will to live - me pushing that deer kept me from getting him and greatly increased his Will to live. Most times - they don’t even know where the danger came from - they just bed down. It was my own stupid fault. Now - I try to give atleast 20 min before I even walk out to shot area - if I feel bad about shot - I May wait hours r till next morning

I hav also been very silly and done that w turkeys - I would recommend not running after any dying animal. They do it on tv w turkey but that not a great decision - million reasons not to. If u hurt the turkey - he may blead
Out if u sit there. I always sit motionless till all turkeys in the group leaves anyway - sometimes the other gobblers May come back and whip the one I shot - cause I did not run them off. That way - they can never relate a boom to a human either - they don’t know what just happened . I hav got good blood out of few turkeys and push them - they don’t hav to go far to hide and generally they will out run u if not hit good - same w deer - give them time to die - it’s more likely when u push them - u never get them and that’s painful

Congrats on the kill and great memory

Just trying to help - wish somebody would hav told me before I boogered up some animals that my fat butt should not try to chase and catch them 😀

And from that day forward, the tribal elders called Hillhunter “Dances with Does.”
Congrats!

I generally agree on not pursuing a wounded deer. It was 76 degrees with a mild night ahead. What’s the use in getting the deer the next day? Sure it I’d be more likely to find it but the meat would be unsavory. Sometimes we have to take unconventional tactics. Generally speaking though you are correct.

I agree buddy coming from someone who eats deer meat you have to do everything you can to get the deer before it spoils otherwise what's the point in even being out there. Thanks for posting
