Guess we'll start up a thread down here for story tellin.......Feel free to post your own stories up if you like..... smile

Just had the next call come in from this morning's hunt. Hunter said that he shot the buck broadside at 54 yards. Before the arrow got there the deer started ducking and wheeling around but he thought the hit was still solid....Went back and watched some video and said it looked like he hit it maybe low in the pocket behind the shoulder but the arrow only penetrated maybe 6-7 inches and stayed in the deer.......He gave it two hours before tracking good blood for just shy of 400 yards where he lost it. I told him we should probably give it some time and recommended looking for it late this afternoon. Unfortunately the hunter has prior obligations for later and cant go until tomorrow morning so it'll be a full 24 hrs after the shot before we get back on it........Supposed to be a good one........We'll see what happens.......

To be continued.............

For what it's worth I think this deer is likely hit low in the brisket.....It may or may not die from the wound just depending on exactly how low...

We have actually had pretty good outcome with shots like that with a crossbow. But we got on them and pushed them pretty quickly. Most were 3/4 mile-1 mile tracks. Good luck!

Yeah, I was debating on whether or not to go ahead and track it midday but it was still pretty warm today and the dogs just dont work well when its hot. That was one of the reasons for wanting to wait until later in the afternoon

5 month old black mouth pup. First deer was a good double lung shot went about 100 yards. Good for his first track.

2nd deer was about 200-250 yards. Had to work a little more but still a fairly east find.

I’m proud of him though didn’t think it was too bad for a puppy

No recovery on this one......It was hard to tell much about the video but it appeared that the arrow just clipped the bottom of the brisket and likely stuck in the offside leg......We took the track out to nearly 1000 yards and called it off after the trail went cold on us. I figure this deer will live and show back up

Next call just came in........Hunter just shot a big one about 10 minutes ago and hit too far back.....He doesnt want to take any chances on it so he's backing out until first light. I've tracked for this hunter in the past and if he says its a good one then its probably gonna be a toad......

To be continued......... smile

This one turned out to not be a gut shot......It was actually clipped really low behind the shoulder.....Shot with a crossbow from a little over 50 yards.....He was still just standing about 100 yards from the hit site when they started tracking and took off.....They followed blood last night for about 250 yards,,,,,We picked up on the track and took it another 700 yards to where we the deer had bedded but it went cold after that. Probably just a good flesh wound.

Also got an update this morning that the first one we tracked this year just showed back up on camera.....Its always good to hear from hunters like this when there's not a recovery.

We were able to recover two bucks today from yesterday's afternoon hunt......both of them still alive.

The first one was a gut shot with nothing but green slime on the arrow......The deer was quartered to the hunter when he shot....The entrance hole wasnt in a bad location but because of the angle it exited way back on the deer. Otis took it around 850 yards without much problem where we found the buck bedded up in a big beaver swamp......We had a little bit of luck on our side with this one because there was water everywhere with multiple small ponds, numerous little waterways, and one good sized pond of probably 4+ acres on one end that was originally man made. There was water everywhere and it was the perfect place for him to lose us.....or loose us......whichever you prefer... grin ...He only crossed one little branch though before finding a place to bed up and Otis was able to keep following him until we spotted him up ahead of us with his head still up. He was so weak by this point that he never even turned to look at the hunter while he sneaked in and put another one in him. If you look in the first pic you can see him laying down.......

Entry hole........The exit was low on the other side. The hunter was shooting down on him at a fairly steep angle due to hunting on a little ridge side.

I didnt get a real good pic of this one's rack but it was a nice clean 8.......

The second track didn’t sound like there was a good chance of recovery at first but once I got there and started tracking the deer it began to look much more promising... The hunter shot this buck with a crossbow from 97 yards……This is the first deer I’ve ever tracked with a compound or crossbow that was shot over 55 yards. The hunter said he had spent a lot of time practicing and he made a pretty dang good shot on the deer…..The only thing I think messed it up was the deer was likely standing just slightly quartered to the hunter and he hit too far forward.

The bolt went in a good 10 inches but fell out just off the edge of the plot. He was putting out a lot of blood at first but it eventually trickled down to specks here and there after 400 ish yards. At about the 750 mark Otis jumped him just out ahead of us and went on bay……We started sneaking in on them but he broke before we could see him. Otis took off after the buck but he got away from him and Otis had to go back to tracking for a minute or two…..We started seeing pretty decent spots of blood again and eventually caught back up to him.

We caught up to them in a hardwood bottom just in time for me to see Otis jump him again and take off. This is when I could see that he was hurting pretty bad…..Same thing happened again though…….He got out of Otis sight and quickly layed down again in some cane just across a little creek branch. We caught up to him again just as Otis was picking his way to the other side and the buck jumped again. This time we were within 20 yards of him. Same thing, Otis takes off after him but the buck was still faster…..

By this time we had gone roughly 3/4 to a mile from the hit site in a big loop. Otis was panting and needing a break so we decided to go back to the truck and get my new cur dog to see if some longer legs would make the buck give it up……He was putting out blood at a pretty good clip the entire time so I felt like he wouldn’t go too much further.

By the time we made it back to the truck, took a break, and then drove back around to where we pulled off of the buck about an hour and a half had gone by. I suited up Lu-Lu my BM cur and Otis to go back in after him. They picked up the track and took us about 250 yards past where we last saw him where we found the buck dead on arrival. I guess us getting him up and pushing him caused him to bleed out finally. The pictures don’t do justice for the mass this buck had……He had some heavy main beam and a big body……

Hoping my pup will be a decent tracker. He has done well with drags, and he has a great nose and drive for it. Joker smelled a deer 150yds away in the back yard earlier needless to say his barking she didn’t stick around long
