I was about to load up a couple dogs and set traps. Read this and decided to lock them up and go alone.

Have any of you got the vaccine for snake bites for your dogs??? Just wondering what the consensus was with all y’all? Lot of good advice I’ve read here and the vet had just texted to check on her and told us about the vaccine.

Sorry to hear about your dog. I know it’s never easy. I didn’t know there was a vaccine for snake bites. Will have to research that.

That's a fear I have everyday during the warmer months for my Boykin....I live in th' Country. I usually kill 2 to 3 Rattlers on th' road or on my place every year. Everybody be EXCEPTIONALLY Careful during late September through October as they will be moving looking to feed up before the Cold comes. I killed one up here 4 years ago while looking for a Dove....Snake never Rattled----wasn't coiled....Boykin was about 6 feet from him looking for the Dove. I don't believe I've ever "Snap-Shot" a shotgun so FAST!! Snake was a little over 4 feet and had a full-grown Squirrel in its Belly!!

I'm guessing it got a major artery. Man I hate reading this and am sorry for your loss. As mentioned, I'm glad she could spend her last hours with loving family and not alone in a kennel at a vet. She's in a much better place now. Love on them other pups to take the sting away.

Never heard of a vaccine unless they were referring to the actual anti-venom

I looked into them a while back. The effectiveness of them is questionable. They also only work for rattlesnakes. It would most likely be a water moccasin to get my dog, so I didn't bother.

Sorry about your dog, I’ve had 2 get bit by rattlesnakes, both on the nose. The lab almost didn’t make it, her head swelled up really bad. Vet put antibiotics in her and we ran an iv at home. Took her a few days but she made it luckily. My GSP got smoked by a baby rattler when she was about 6 months old. I fed her bacon grease, Benadryl, and gave her some antibiotics I got from tractor supply. She was fine in 2 days. That dog hates snakes with a passion, she hunts them down in our yard/mountain barks like a mad dog and runs to back door barking like crazy until I come out and ask her where it’s at. She’ll run to it and bark like crazy again until I kill it.

We are not perfect, only forgiven!!!

Some coon hunters I know tell me a gas soaked rag held on the bite sight will draw out a lot of the venom. Not sure how effective this is but that's what they told me.

Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

A moccasin is the worst, if you ask me. Even if they live, the necrosis will ruin them. If it's in their feet and legs. Any where really, can put them at risk for infection down the road.

I’m not sure if snake bite still follows the rule of thirds but basically a third of bites are dry, a third are little venom and then a third are full venom.

I’ve been told quail hunters in Texas carried cattle prods, they zap the bite site and supposedly it lessened the venoms effects

Then again those could be old wives tales.

I found a dog by the pond a few years ago he couldn't move anything but his eyes...I figured a moccasin got him, I put a bullet in him to ease the suffering

That's not surprising. Moccasins get really fat heads, which means they have a lot of venom.

I quit taking him out to the swamps in the summer for this reason. Any body of water in the HSV area has them though, and I see a lot of them in Bankhead.

I really worry about him this time of year, but nothing makes him happier than running through the woods.

I did some snake avoidance training last summer, and he hasn't chased a snake since. I do not fully trust him to leave a snake alone, but it gives me some peace of mind.

My first chocolate lab got hit in the foot. Teal season back in the late 80’s in a borrow pond. Dang nest of them not sure how many we killed getting out of there.

Guy I was hunting with, dad was a doctor and called his personal vet. I met him at his office and he administered anti-venom he’d picked up somewhere. Probably an hour in my dogs foot was purple and the vet said he may loose his foot. He lanced it before sedating my dog. No feeling in it.

Anyways dog recovered and cost me $400.

You using any kind of training collars? They help alot, especially with gamey dogs. Trying to defy a thousand years prey drive can be challenging.

Moc nests gives me the heebs. It probably ain't as a big deal with retrievers. On long range high endurance dogs it can make alot of difference if it affects their stride. It's strenuous enough for them in this heat. It's usually your good dog too, ain't never one the the dang culls.

Dogs get over not doing stuff rather quickly.
